did my truck go into regen?
08 F-250 6.4 895 miles.
was driving my beast around town today running erands and i glanced at the digital display on the dash and notice it said "cleaning exhaust filter". not sure how long it was on but it quickly went away. then the truck starting running like sh&t. it was lacking in power and when i got on the gas it made a really loud vacume noise rather than the usual whistling from the turbos.
i stopped at the bank and ran a system check and it went through everything and towards the end the "cleaning exhaust filter" came up again. did my thing at the bank, came back to the truck started it and ran a system check again and no more "cleaning exhaust filter". started driving it, still felt funky but as i drove it more it went back to being normal.
so im guessing the truck went into regen right? how often should i expect this to happen? i checked my tail pipes and there is some soot. not a lot but enough to turn my finger balck when i rub it. thanks!

while i was driving with a cracked/defective dpf, i did not see any regens.
once my cracked dpf was replaced, i saw the "cleaning exhaust filter" message approx. every 800 miles of highway driving. i had the same symptoms, power seemed sluggish, boost dropped, and my mpg's dropped about 1 mpg. sounds to me like everything is normal and your truck went into regen...........
my regens lasted about 15 mins of highway driving. i knew the regens were over when my mpgs started slowly rising but there was no message stating the regen was finished.
if you stop noticing regens in your truck and your tailpipes turn black with soot, take the truck in to have the dpf checked.

That was a regen cycle, no doubt. What a god-awful sound!!!
You guys remember the Budweiser "Real Men of Genius" commercials? We need to have one for "Here's to you Mr. EPA tree-hugger diesel particulate enforcer guy.... thanks for ruining our gas mileage just so you can sit in traffic on your vespa drinking your choco-soy-mocha-latte without having to be bothered by a whiff of diesel on your way to the organic market...."
I'll stop right there....

I'm ordering my Spartan tuner this afternoon.... friggin regen cycle again at lunch!! Had to drive out of my way to the interstate and then another 30 miles to get it to complete..... This has to be the dumbest thing ever invented (aside from gangster rap music).
....and we GOTTA get Budweiser to make that commercial. Effen hippies!!!

Besides soot in your tail pipe, what are the negatives of having a cracked DPF? My truck has 1,200 miles, I have never seen a regen, and the tail pipes will definitely turn your fingers black. Others on here have said I probably have a cracked DPF but I am wondering whether or not I should have it replaced. Is this affecting my mpg? Is it affecting my performance?

my truck now has 7400 miles on it. i noticed my truck's first regen at approx. 600 miles. i did not have another regen up until after i had my dpf replaced, which was at approx. 5000 miles. i have had 3 regens approx. every 800 miles since the dpf was replaced.
keep in mind, my highway driving is conservative at 65-70 mph, 1800-1900 rpms, trying to keep the boost at 10 and rarely above 20. i do very little city driving. my mpg's pretty much stayed the same 14.5 to 15.5, except during regen, when the mpg's rapidly went down approx. 1 mpg. after regen, they would slowly go back up. i did not notice any performance problems until about 400 miles before the dpf was replaced. these included a light blue/grey smoke billowing out of the tailpipe during acceleration. acceleration was also very slow if i really stepped on it, as if it wasn't getting any fuel. that sucked as i knew i had a problem.
yea, without regens, i didn't have to watch my mpgs drop due to my fuel being used to burn the soot, and that was nice. howerver, i knew that 50k new truck i was driving had a defective part possibly due to some internal engine malfunction and sooner or later i would have a problem. i did.......
