Do You Know.....

....the height of your rig? This past weekend, coming back towards Baltimore from All Tricks Nationals at Carlisle, PA, I-83 was shut down so I used my GPS to find a go around. Not a problem, found a bypass and lo and behold I also found an UNMARKED underpass. Well, it WAS marked right AT the underpass!

As I knew my 5th wheel height was higher than the underpass, I made an emergency stop and had to back out from the road and go around MY bypass. If you don't know your highest point of your trailer, I advise you to FIND OUT ASAP! You never know when you may need it.

I'm thinking about painting the height backwards on the driver's side of my Prowler so I can see it in my rear view......

I have a decal on the overhead console with the truck height. The fiver is a measured 13'-1". I have thought about putting that height centered on the front cap so I could see it with the inside rear view mirror since there is nothing else to see in that mirror while towing.

I have been practicing (all the time even when not towing) trying to be totally observant of every bridge or other structure I go under with respect to posted height and lets just say I got some work to do because I keep finding myself on the other side realizing I didn't pay attention to the height sign.

You are correct, it is when you get off a known previous traveled road you really need to be on top of it. Another good reason to slow down.

Thanks for sharing your experience. We need to think about these things to help avoid catastrophic results.

Truck Height

If you will buy a "trucking" atlas, you will find many of the low height underpasses listed. Pays to know your height!!

I drive an 18 wheeler and use my atlas to check for heights when pulling oversize or high loads. Can save a bunch of time and money.

You can get a trucker's atlas at any truck or travel center, usually can get previous year for $4-$5. Cheap compared to a cargo damage or trailer damage claim.

like bnmccoy...I too have a sticker on my drivers underside visor with the height of my trailer written there as measured by me...just in case...

Good advice for all to KNOW their heights and weights for that matter...

Joe.

Yep... that's a good idea - just don't forget to measure the highest point (usually the AC unit).

Not for mine...the A/C unit sits on the rear of the roof (after the 5er drop). Highest on mine is the aftermarket vent housing for the front bedroom! About 10" higher than the roofline!

Mine's small enough that if it has trouble, a commercial truck couldn't fit under it :P
