I was a cross-country owner operator for a decade starting in the mid-seventies. I had three different tractors, two with Cummins and one with a DD/Allision. All the maintenance and repairs were done by me. The diesel odor was part of the life.
Last month I bought my first diesel anything since the mid-eighties. When I changed the fuel filter a week ago I was mildly surprised that the smell of diesel wasn't nearly as strong as I remember. It also seemed to be much clearer.
Is this because of the Ultra Low Sulfur fuel? I live in California so I assume that's what I get from the pump?
You got it. It started to change some years back when they lowered the sulphur to 500ppm. Now it's at 15ppm, so yes, it does have a different smell.

ULSD sucks, you might wanna add some lubricant additive to the fuel.

What's good? "Back in the day" I used Power Service, but that was more for keeping injectors clean than lubrication. I also used to use Siloo but I'm not sure that is even available anymore. Since one truck had an Allison tranny, I'd add the used ATF to the fuel. From what I've read here THAT'S not a good idea for these new engines. I've also seen where people add 2-cycle oil.
I have added Amsoil's Octane Boost to the tank but I don't think that does anything for lubrication.
I buy the 10$ bottles from walmart, or else (better) large just of special additive from "milligan bio tech", of saskatchewan, and its supposed to be the best hands down, they have test proving their additives are 10x more concentrated than the next leading brand.
I think a 1 gallon jug is 60$, and treats 3500 liters of fuel.

I have used additives from amsoil, and I like them. The cetane boost does nothing for lubrication. You also need to use their fuel additive. I have also used wal-marts 2 cycle outboard oil too. That stuff did surprisingly well in a study I saw a while back. It's on this website somewhere. Do a search for diesel fuel additives, you should find it. In fact, I'll try to find it and post it here.

And where's the best place to buy Opti Lube products?

A lot of the stuff listed in this study can be found at most truck stops. Be sure you get what you want. If you noticed, some products from the same company did better than others from the same company. Also, if you have a parts house that caters mostly to big trucks, they may carry some the stuff too.

I have used Red line oils diesel fuel catalyst a few times. It seemed to help the mpg's a bit. It has help the lubricicty of the fuel and had some injector cleaners in it too.
