Question Question ????

I keep thinking of updating my 86 F250 4x4 460, C-6, 3:55 gears. I'm not big on the newer engines the more I read the more I think maybe I should just rebuild the 460 & C-6. The other thing that hits me when I think of a newer truck is insurance, license plates, & state sales tax. Then buying a used truck I'm I buying someone else's problem? Crap a 02 F250 4x4 SC longbed V-10 $15,000 & up. That is a 7 year old truck, then finding one with less miles than my 86 (187,000) isn't easy either. Paying $15,000 for a truck with 120,000+ miles causes me to really think. Oh yea there are cheaper ones but from side lot dealers as I call them. "Everyone buys here" most are rejects.
Anyway, Can anyone tell me of a shop or mechanic that KNOWS 460s & is good, that rebuilds engines. I want to price out the cost to have someone take the truck & return it with a nice rebuilt 460. I know a tranny shop in Fallon & would like to know of a shop or mechanic in the Northern part of the State.

Thanks,
Craig

Well, maybe someone else has a reccomendation, you never know.

I'm glad you're coming out next weekend! We're going to mark the course this Saturday, and I will be in the contingency tent during registration so you'll know where to find me.

He said either that Neal's Garage on Shurz Hwy or Lester's Automotive on Nevada St. would both do a good job.

Thanks for that info. The other thought I had was to enroll in a class at the college & see if I couldn't work something out with the instructor to build it myself as a class project or whatever. I carried many certs when I was a mechanic. I still have both an ASE & EPA Type I & II high pressure refrigeration licenses. I spent 20 years wrenching. I just no longer have the equipment to do it at home. But I understand the college is pretty well equipped. May have to sent out some machining though. I'll contact the two you suggest & see what they say. Never hurts to check all options. I'm not sure the college will be willing but I'll start checking it out.

Thanks Again,
Craig

I contacted Lester's in Fallon on Nevada St. They have a guy that works there that has a built 84 F250, 4x4 460. that he built. So I'm going to let them start this deal. I will do it in phases. They recommended buying the towing trans complete kit from Summit in Reno. They sell the Hughes Trans, converter, cooler as a kit for $1600. It is built for towing. I thought there prices were very fair. So I hope to get the transfer case & trans done this winter. Then the engine next year.
Michelle thanks for the info. on them.

Good luck with your project. If you were closer to my area I would tell you where I took my '96 for the engine. Wish I was going down there for Labor day but I have to stay in Wendover as an emergency backup dealer.

Have fun this weekend.
