Metal body filler...

Hi Folks,
years ago, (about 40), my dad and I used to get a lot of wrecked cars and fix them up. We used to get a product from the local auto paint and body place called Aluma-Lead. That may not be the correct way it was spelled.
The stuff was far superior to the bondo type stuff and ut was more expensive as I recall. The up side was that it was far tougher and adhered to metal a lot better. You could even drill and tap the stuff. The down side was price, harder to work and you had to be careful how you mixed the stuff. If you got too much of the hardener in it you had to get it on quick. It was not nearly as forgiving as the bondo type stuff. In spit of those issues we used it a lot and I considered it superior to the bondo stuff. It has been many years since I was into to that sort of stuff and the place where we used to get it was sold several times and moved. No one there has any recollection of the product now. I was just wondering if anybody knows of this product or a similar one that is available, and if so what is it called and where can I get it? Aside from lead, it is the only thing I would consider filling a seam with.

Later Folks...

Here's a link to an exceptionally good article about filler. While it doesn't necessarily deal with filling seams, it's well worth reading.

I read in a different forum that there is a current product called 'Evercoat Metal 2 Metal' that is similar to Aluma-Lead. I don't have experience with either product.

Eastwood carries a filler from USC called All Metal it says it adheres well to wood or metal and can be drilled and tapped. Haven't used it but I am considering it. Costs about 85.00 a gallon.

The link mentioned by 56panel is a good one and I talked to Reed via email and he helped me out alot. I was using a product called All Metal that uses a liquid hardener, Reed prefers the cream hardeners because they help change the colour so you know it's mixed. If you don't get this all metal material mixed properly it doesn't harden, the trouble I was having.

Hi Jim,
First of all, thanks for the link. That looks like what I'm interested in and after all this time, there probably have been improvements made. I'm going to look for someplace that sells the stuff.

Try Fastenal for Alvins Lab-Metal

If you have a fastenal near u, then they carry USC All-Metal, which is what I use..(or plan on using) It is a little pricy, but I think worth it..Plus you can go pick it up and save on shipping...

Here is a link to the Fastenal website for more info...You can check your local store..Also, the pricing on the website shows $91.96, but my fastenal splits the 4-pack up to sell individually...
Lab Metal Compound 12oz | Fastenal

I plan on using it for filling seams and welded areas of my patch panels...

Hope this helps

All Metal is good stuff to get the panel to shape but it is pretty hard to sand. I like to finish with a good plastic filler but I try to get the metal as straight as I can before filling so the total is less than 1/8" of any kind of filler.

Your local paint store should have All Metal if not they can order it.

Thanks Man,
We have a Fastenal store here. I'll check it out the next time I'm over that way as I don't really need it real soon. Even if I have to buy it without breaking up the pack It won't matter because I only have to open up i/4 of it at a time and the rest should keep as long as it is sealed.

Later Man...
