Thanks. I've been trying to get my truck running for the first time before I start re-assembling the sheet metal back on frame. I have all the wiring temporarily bolted to the bare frame. And I'm working with an half dead battery. I stuck it on a charger overnight but that doesn't allow me enough run time to put a tune on the engine and check for any leaks. So I'm thinkin the genny must not be putting out.?
Yeah I know !!! Should have had it tested first.

Actually no on that last post you do need a little juice to put to the ignition to get it going.
If its a Gen then once its going then you can remove the Battery, and it should stay running on the output of the Generator.
Back in the 60s when batteries and tires were to expensive, I bought a 1950 Ford for $35.00 the guy wanted the battery so we started the car and he took the battery out.
I then drove home 5 miles, had an old battery at home that was barely alive and then to start the car we had to push it.
Used to check out Generators in the Junk Yard before removing them, by hooking up a Battery to it cut the fan belt as it was rotten anyway. If the Generator turned then it was good enough, usually cost a buck to buy it.

You could run a pulley off your drive line that spins the generator.
Sounds to me like we are going back in time.
The good old days. Hand crank.
Yes I'm going green. Getting rid of my batteries. And run on peanut oil.
Wonder if you can crank start a diesel by hand ?? Or is that another forum?
