Unhappy 4 wheel drive problems

On my 1999 F150 The 4 wheel drive switch is on the dash board (like the a/c ****) it goes in to 4 wheel drive low and high just fine but when I flip the switch back to 2 wheel drive it stays in 4 even though the switch is on 2H I have to disconnect the battery to un-engauge the 4 wheel drive. im not sure if the problem is in the switch or in the front end... please reply

Do you have manual locking hubs, if so your problem could be there. If it goes into 4wd but dosnt disengadge it could be the dash switch or the siliniod on the transfer case. You could try removing the dash switch an unplug the two wires the activate 4l and 4h and see if it comes out of 4wd. if that works your dash switch is bad. You can also check the current at the transfer case silinoid with a volt meter and see if the current changes when the dash switch is changed itnto 2h,4l,4h. Another thing to check is the siliniod on the transfer case. The siliniod may be sticking once activated. It could be bad or might need some clean up. try removing to two bolts that mount it to the transfercase and watch what the siliniod does when the dash switch is moved to diffrent positions. One of these ideas should help identify your situation-have fun.

I would look into the t-case shift motor. The last year manual hubs were available on a 1/2 ton was 1996. You could try tapping on the t-case shift motor with a rubber mallet and then see if it goes back into 2wd.

I have the same problem on my 98 Explorer, dont know what the problem is but I rarely use the 4wd so I just keep a wrench with me and disconnect the battery when I need to.
