I found a way to prevent having your tailgate stolen. Park in a parking lot and have a moron pull into the space behind you and sandwich a shopping cart between the vehicles. It leaves a nice dent and nobody will want your tailgate. I only wish I had seen it happen so I could have "thanked" him.

or when preparing to remove your trailer, un-latch the ball, lower your tailgate and then have your Nephew jump up on the trailer because he is too lazy to walk around it... and you will get a nice 5-6 inch long scratch (that is all I got as I was standing right there and was able to raise the tailgate...) or even worse a nice dent....
I lock mine anyhow... someone still might want it - scratch and all...
I lock mine on my '02 & now on my '08 with back up camera & bedliner, I have a security camera watching my truck 24/7.........twice now I twarted theives with the panic button......one at 5AM on a Sun. morn. about to steal the hub caps LOL
Can't beat the price, bang for the buck so to speak. Especially if you ever have to use it and give it up afterwards. I'd rather the police take a $400 gun & maybe never give it back than one worth 4 or 5 times that.
Guns are fine, but locking it is the better approach.Your tailgate could be lifted while you're in Wal-mart or a movie theater, possessing a gun would be useless in that case. Thieves love parking lots.
