2000 F-350 diesel running light short

Howdy,

The running lights and dash light went out on our 2000 F350. When the fuse is replaced it immediately blows. We removed the rear wiring harness connections below the engine compartment fuse box. Also removed the electric trailer brake module. Replace fuse and blew again. So this isolates the problem in the front of the truck between the dash and the front bumper. We removed the driving lights/dimmer switch, then removed all the running light bulbs located in the front of the truck. With an ohm meter we get .3 ohms on the brown wire (running lights. There is no visible damage to the wiring harness. We have beat our heads against the wall trying to figure this problem out. I know it is something simple. Currently we are ordering the Ford Schematics for this truck. Anybody out there have any Ideas.

Thanks for your time,

Headlight Switch ?

What happens when you disconnect wiring at the dash?

For a short term fix, you could isolate the wire and run a new one from the headlight switch up to the lights

Well that may be a long term fix! . I have not been able to isolate the dash lights. Tried removing dash panel and peices of plastic was cracking so I stopped. Once I get the schematics I will locate the correct connector for the dash. Thanks for your replies.

Well we got the $80.00 electrical schematics from Ford and started picking away at the shorted circuit. We ruled out the dash, rear ligthting, cab lighting , front lighting Electronic Module, etc. Still no fix. The only thing left in that circuit was some wiring for un-installed accessories. The first one we looked at was the auxillary marker lighting for the roof. Found a ()#$*&)%#*& nickel in the male plug that was shorting out the circuit. Could not beleive it. What happend is the crew that uses this truck put money on the dash which slid when turning. The nickel went through a space on the right side of the dash and pachinco'ed (sp) down to the kicker panel area and into the exposed plug wich was facing up! Well thanks for the replies.

Glad you found it. $80 for a schematic, ouch.

It still beats what the dealers would of charged. The electrical service manual covers the whole vehicle too.
