Every time an OD light on an Explorer we had was flashing, the trans needed a complete rebuild. The banging is limp mode. BTW, explorer auto transmissions are not great, regardless of year.

If its a "95" then it should be OBD1, you can read the codes yourself with a paper clip or any suitable piece of wire.

Find the EEC test port and then follow the instructions. Have a pencil and paper ready. Make a mark each time the light flashes in groups. ///=3, /////=5, and so on. Your marks would look like this for code 145 / //// ///// on the paper.
The codes will repeat, it may take you a few times to make sure you have it right.

If it has a electrical problem, a solenoid problem the KOEO test will show that, the continuous memory test should also have some information for you. Regardless of the CEL being on or not.

If it is OBD2 then you need a reader, or a buddy with one. If you lived close I'd be happy to pull the codes for you with my laptop. But you don't, so find someone that is close that will. Maybe another poster?

Keep driving it and you will be walking, "guessing" Throwing money at it, money you don't have from the sound of it is not going to correct the problem.

 

A mechanic will have a code reader that can read both OBD1 and OBD2 with the same scanner or you can self test. I didn't have an OBD1 capable reader so I took the 95' to the mechanic, he read the codes with his OBD2 reader right in front of me.

 

Just had the transmission serviced and they put in a new torque converter. Car beens driving great for a couple of days and now I hear a clicking sound when hitting break, changing gears to go forward or backwards and hear some type of a stump noise. Motor oil and filter changed and transmission fluid added which was low and flushed. Anyone knows what this is? Thanks

 

What is happening is the computer sees the 3rd gear ratio code and puts itself into LIMP MODE. This is what causes the 1st to 2nd bang shifting. I have a 95 explorer with the same problem. You can keep driving it but take it slow at the 1st to 2nd shift and DO NOT PULL A TRAILER. THESE TRANSMISSIONS ARE NOT DESIGNED TO PULL TRAILERS. IT WILL ONLY RUIN YOUR TRANNY FASTER.
