5.13 or 5.38 gears

So I'm getting ready to gear my axles. I'm running 44s on one ton axles in my 94 F-150. I was wondering if anyone has ran 5.38s or if the pinion is too small for my size of tire and heavy right foot.

U plan on putting this on the street? Also, what motor you going to run? With either of those gears and 44's your gonna need some help to get it down the road. If it's offroad only, what are you using the truck for, just mud? Again, your hp and tqe numbers are gonna play important parts.

it will spend time on the street. But it spends alot of time in the sand snow, and trails. won't really spend any time in the snow. Right now it's got the stock 351 but it'll have a fairly nice big block in it soon. I know that the gears will still be high with a 5.38 but didn't know if the pinion would be too small period

I think with either 5.13 or 5.38 your still going to be screaiming on the road, so might as well go 5.38. Im not sure on the pinion size/teeth count of those though.

Any pics of the bronco?

definitely go with the 5.13's.

i just did em in my f350. i have a fairly stock motor, but im only running 38's. i'm very soon upgrading to 44's and starting to work my motor more. my truck gets fairly decent gas milage for a truck of its size since the upgrade, and it doesnt scream AT ALL on the street. the only time it screams a little more than i'd like it to is in the mud. the truck spins the tires no problem, and i'f i'm not hooking up on anything, it stays in 2nd and screams a little bit. the downside of an auto trans.

if i really put my foot in it, the e4od shifts from 2nd to 3rd at about 3800, and it has power through all 4 gears.

if your putting a healthy big block in that truck, i'd say stick with the 5.13's. anything taller and i think it would scream/lose top end.

Another thing, are the one tons under the truck stock? If so your pushing the limits of it, save for some chromos.

I am planning on running chromos eventually but I plan on breaking mine first. There has been alot of money thrown at this axle already in brackets and steering so just trying to get it back on the road/trail now. The only thing I'm worried about the 5.38s is the tooth count but I guess I can always get them dipped. Not too worried about it screaming down the road since I have over drive. Oh and if anyone needs a really nice hysteer system, you need to look up ballistic fabrications double sheer setup. It is AWSOME!!!! I have it on my 60 now and it looks tough!

Thumbs up

its tough to say either way,
like kjett said how much power ya gonna make(400,500,etc)
also what is your cam RPM range and do ya have a stahl converter or tans mods,
both are very important in choosing gears
