You kinda lost me there, if your talking about the little round piece of metal that slides on the shaft that turns the dist. it's job is to keep the shaft in the oil pump when you pull the dist out.
You should be able to do this without pulling the dist. just make sure the shaft is in place before you start cranking down any bolts.

Also be sure to prime the new oil pump before putting it on, this is done by placing the pump in a pan of oil and turning the pump till the oil flows through it . They normally do it on thier own when installed but they have also been known to air lock and not pump oil thus destroying the engine.

Well everything i know has been covered really... all i can say is best of luck, and this job is a P.I.A. Best done by removing the motor mounts, and using a cherry picker... some times you have to some times its just easier.

Yes the clip goes towards the top of the block. I would replace the shaft if the clip moves easily. I had a problem a while back with my 302 where when I pulled the distributor out and the shaft fell in the oil pan. I didn't know what had happened at the time but realized it when I had no oil pressure. If the clip isn't snug threre is a good chance that it will slide down and take a chance of this happening. If you buy a new one the clip will already be in the right place where all you will need to do is stick it in there. This is just a suggestion to save you some trouble down the road. Better to spend a few bucks now than have something as simple as that get you down the road. I think I paid $5.04 for mine at NAPA.

That little clip goes on one way. Make sure it is positioned towards the block, and in such a way that when the dist. is pulled the clip will "grab" onto the shaft and do its job.
I took a broken dist. and gutted the advance out, removed the gear and cut a hole in the side so I could hook up a 1/2" drill to prime the engine. I was tired when I first tried it, couldn't get any pressure and it kept making a "baaloop" sound-then I realized the drill needs to turn counter clockwise! Made good pressure then!
