The cam on a small block is designed to rotate in the same direction as the crank. With a chain it does naturally. When you use a gear drive the cam would rotate in the opposite direction, as in the picture, without the counter gears. i'm assuming the the cam in the pic is ground to rotate opposing the crank.

F3504ME is starting off with a positive reputation.
You can gear drive a car no problem, but there are two idler gears between the crank and cam gears to correct the rotation of the cam, the two gears in a small block do not drive direct like above..... Back in the day...we used to convert to gear drive but they were pretty noisy.... could here it coming a block away...
