Does anyone know for certain what the differences are between a Cali emissions rig and a "regular" one? Mine's the Cali model and I've heard that the glow plug system is different (GPCM vs. GPR, although my early 99 seems to have a GPR) and that the fuel system is slightly different (something to do with a pressure regulator?) If anyone could give me some more details I'd appreciate it.

Catalytic converter, whats that?
Any idea on what is different about the glow plug system? As far as I can tell I have a GPR but maybe the way it's wired up is different. I do know a dead glow plug threw an SES light for me.
I bought a PMT2 federal emissions PCM and got to wondering if I'd mess something up by plugging it in to my Cali emission truck- I can't afford to mess anything up so trying to do some homework before the PCM gets here.

I don't think they had the GPCM on the early 99's, since it was really a 98 model year Chase. I don't know how the GPR would trip a SES unless it there is some resistance measurement somewhere. Did it throw a code for a specific glow plug, or just state a glow plug problem? The GPCM has a wire going to each glow plug so it can throw the code for the appropriate cylinder.
Sorry, but I've got no idea on how the new PCM will act. I would think worst case you would just have to switch to a standard GPR wiring (if you have an extra wire or sensor in line somewhere). Got any pics of your GPR so we can compare?

Chris- I'll get some photos tonight. When I had my truck scanned, it came up with a code for "faulty glow plug left bank" or something along those lines- can't remember the code number now but I have the invoice at home (we've been down this road before I think- the code listed on my invoice is wrong).

The glow plug relay will trip the SES light. Early 99's have the relay. They also have a "glow plug monitor circuit" to make sure it is working. That's why it trips the SES.

Well that helps explains things for you Chris. Thanks for the info Andy!

I was thinking the same thing. I already left reps for Andy for filling in that piece of the puzzle. Now you just get to find this circuit. I'll look tonight and see if I can read up on this.

Any pictures yet Chase? From looking through the manual, it appears the GPCM doesn't show up until 2001. On your model it looks like there is a metal bar attached to one post of the GPR that acts as a T to power the left and right bank glow plugs. An additional wire with a shunt is attached to each side of the T that feeds back to the PCM to monitor for a drop in voltage across the shunt to trip the left / right bank glow plug SES.
What year is your new PCM? You may just need to disconnect the PCM wires and tape them up, then remove the T off the GPR and be good to go. The next question is, will the new PCM be looking for an AIH that you don't have?
Do you have the link to the workshop manuals? The glow plugs are under the engine portion of the manual. You can read up on this yourself.

I remember seeing the workshop manual link, but forgot to save it at home (dumb head me)- could you repost it in here so I'll be able to find it? I forgot to take pictures last night too- double dumb head me.
The new PCM is an 01 PMT2 program. Maybe this weekend I'll spend some time under da hood and figure out where the wires go and what might be needed to avoid doing bad things to my truck.
