Leaky tire, should I use "green slime" as a fix.

Hi Guys,

I have a slow leak in one of my Revo tires. I plan on replacing these in about a 15 months. I tried a plug, but it is leaking faster as I put some miles on the X. The tire will now loose 30 lbs in a day. I was going to try the "green slime" but heard it can decay aluminum wheels. Any thoughts on the "slime"?

Thanks,
Neil

I don't recommend using it. The primary concern is for the integrity of the tire itself. If it was just plugged and no patch was applied to the inside of the tire, then air can find its way between the belts and you could be flirting with belt separation and a catastrophic tire failure. If the tire is otherwise okay, at least pull the tire and apply a patch to the inside of the tire and then mount and rebalance. Of course, this is assuming that the plug is in the tread of the tire and the hole was not too large. If the hole/plug is in the side wall, get rid of the tire immediately.

Green Slime is okay for wheel barrows and farm implement tires but I wouldn't recommend using on any highway tire. Even then, the latex base can cause corrosion of the rim if the paint or anodizing isn't 100%. An additional concern with highway tires is that it can also affect tire balance, particularly in cold weather.
