Help me ID Engine and Tranny

Hello, I've never been in this part of FTE before, but I need help with this engine and tranny. I believe it is a 1953 Ford 215 since it has a three speed overdrive tranny. Since it is orange with a silver valve cover, I was told meant it was from a car. Any way, I now the OD is a Borg Warner R10, but will the transmission work on my 72 F-100 with a 302 (changing bell housings)? What vehicle would this have been in? Was the three speed overdrive first offered in 53, or earlier?

Thanks for the help,
Jeremy

Why would you want an older tranny? I would go with something newer, like a O/D tranny out of '87 and up F-150. I don't know the particulars to doing either tranny swap or if either would work behind your 302, but I would rather go newer than older. An older tranny would have more miles, older technologies, both in design and materials, and finding parts would be easier with a newer transmission.

Just my 2¢.*

I believe the tranny to bell pattern will be "off". I'd suggest looking for a late 70's early 80's three on the tree manual trans that has OD.

Sure looks like a 215 to me. As for the 3spd overdrive, I believe they were offered as an optional trans. in 53 trucks. If your going to change your motor and trans. I'd say hang on to the 215 and 3spd. every once in awhile someone is after those.

Yep, 215 and Borg warner 3spd overdive.

I had 55 F-100 with a 65 Mustang 289 and that transmission and it was a dream drive train. You will assuredly be able to find a bell housing that will fit, although, the transmission has the same mounting (front) as a standard 3 speed. The transmission mount will just be farther aft....and that may vary with it being a Ford or Merc overdrive.

Good Luck - have fun with it.

Julie!

I'll probably just stick with the 3.03 tranny that is in my 72 and see if someone else wants this for 50's trucks. I found this drive train in a Studebaker Hawk that someone never completed. It was taken out of a good running 50's car or truck in the 70's and that is as far as it got. I tore the engine down and it is good and clean. You can still see the crosshatching on the cylinder walls, and it is a standard bore. Someone can use it that is looking for a correct replacement in one of ya'lls trucks.

Thanks for the help,
Jeremy
