Misaligned gear selector indicator

The gear shift indicator is off by one gear and I would like to fix it. The Expedition shows the vehicle in reverse when it's actually in park. How do I go about fixing this minor but annoying issue?

Under the dash around the top right area of the steering column you will find a cable with an adjuster. Turn that adjuster with your fingers until the selector lines up correctly.

Before attempting the adjustment, verify the linkage is not loose. There have been reports of the linkage arm loosening from the shift tube in the column.

both project and alloro got it right...I would first make sure all linkages are good and tight and then adjust the cable adjuster if necessary...

I had a problem with my bronco not lining up and then it didnt want to start cuz it was fully in park...

Gear shift indicator off 1 notch

Mine did same thing. Try taking up the slack in the cable by adjusting the wheel. If thats not enough, use a plastic cable tie to tie up the cable and remove even more slack. Has worked for mine for the past 5-6 years.

The plastic cage that surrounds the adjustment **** has been broken which allows the gear selector indicator to be off. I might have to super glue the cage or zip tie it into place. I'd have to buy a new cable from Ford just to replace that cage which makes up the thumb screw assy. Thanks for the help guys. It saved me from tearing the dash apart.
