Ok, without sounding like a complete idiot, I have a REALLY deep question. I KNOW Im thinking too much. If we are drilling multiples of thousands and millions of gallons of oil out of the ground a year, whats used to fill the void in the earth??? There is now a hole under the surface of the earth "hovering" over this void. Whats to stop the surface from falling in the hole??? Deep, I know
Oil is, generally, located in porous rock and not in a pool or lake under ground. When the oil is pumped out the rock remains. There is no hole or void below ground.

Thats too bad. I was hoping the mid east would cave in like a sink hole.
Thats very interesting. I never knew that oil was located in porous rock. I thought it WAS like a pool under ground. Thanks for the goelogy lesson guys!!
I have no experience in drilling oil, but I have also heard that in some instances the pocket of oil is pressurized from above and the pressure forces the oil out of the ground. I have no idea what gets injected into the hole, whether it is air, inert gas, or liquid. If you guys have another 5 seconds to spare though, I can tell you everything that I know about drilling oil.

As long as we can get our troops out first, let it happen soon.

I should stop now before I hurt myself
An oil reserve is not usually simply an empty pocket, it is usually a coal bed, shale, gravel, etc, some sort of porus material.
When you start pumping oil from a formation, it all depends on the formation. There are underground formations that have salt water around, others have high pressure gas, or any imaginable combination.
Formations also can flow water IE an underground river. Drilling into such a formation you can hit water and then need to pump cellophane pieces down hole to plug the zone. Fluids can also flow into the ground, such as drilling and losing drilling fluid circulation.
Pressurized gas pockets can have enough pressure to blow 1000's of meters of mud clean out of the hole, and release a bunch of gases, some good, others not.
What i'm amazed at is than these gases stay under the ground that deep without seeping up.
