Radiator Fan Fell Off

I purchased a 1988 F250 diesel about two months ago. Today while driving to the store I noticed a noise from the engine compartment that I had never heard before.

I pulled over and took a look under the hood....to my suprise I found the radiator fan had unscrewed itself off the engine and was just laying there.

A little perplexed I simply screwed it back on as tight as I could, since I had no special tools on hand.

I drove home and no sooner did I open the hood then to find that the fan had fallen off again.

No damage had occurred to any compnents that goodness, but I am stumped as to why the fan would keep falling off.

Its was a rather cooler temperature today and my gauges never rose to any higher than normal level.

Can anyone explain what is the probable problem is here and what the remidies would be to fix it.

Thanks for your help and ask away if you have any additional questions

Astonishing! I have never heard of that before. I replaced the fan clutch on my `87 F250 diesel a few years ago and I thought I was going to need Superman to get it unscrewed. Have you any side play in the water pump shaft? If so this may cause enough vibration to make it loosen. Have you had a good look at the male and female threads? When you screwed it back on did it feel a good fit on the threads? The only thing I can suggest, if everything looks OK, is to apply Locktite to the threads and tighten as good as you can.

I think you solved it

With a little closer inspection, I noticed there are ball bearings seated on the inside of the fan. One of them has lodged itself out of sorts and has bound up the fan so it doesn't spin freely.

I am assuming this is the so called clutch you talk about which I will now have to replace. Any hints on how you got your apart....

Thanks

You have got over the tough bit, namely unscrewing the clutch assembly. The clutch cannot be repaired, you replace it. That is a good price from FTEpartsguy.com. Simply unbolt the fan from the clutch assembly, bolt it to the new one and screw on to the water pump shaft. job done. Good luck.
