2000 expedition p0500

I am trying to help a neighbor with his expy. He says it hesitates sometimes and only when its warmed up, of course when he came over it was running fine. I hooked up my AE scanner and it shows p0500. its a 2000 expidition 2wd xlt. Is it as simple as replacing the speed sensor (on the rear diff?).
thanks guys.

So, is this P0500 a pending code only?

The P0500 is saying that the PCM detected a problem in the vehicle speed information. The problem is that the PCM gets its vehicle speed info from the VSS, the TCSS (4WD only), the ABS module, the GEM module, or the CTM (Central Timer Module). Additionally, if the engine rpm is above the torque converter stall speed and the engine load is high, the PCM will infer the vehicle must be moving and set the P0500 if it doesn't receive any vehilce speed info.

My guess is that the P0500 is an intermitant and sperate issue from the hesitation complaint.
