89 302 in place of a 92 351

I am swapping a 302 out of an 89 150 into my 92 FSB. The Bronco seems to have more plugs by the firewall the the 150 did. My question is will the 351 harness work on the 302 or can I just use the underhood harness from the 302 on the Bronco. The 150 had a C-6 and the Bronco has an E4OD. I do have the ECU from the 150. It is just a plow truck and I do not need OD or lockup.

why the down grade? you wont be happy and will not get any better mileage and worse performance.

you will need to find an 92 bronco/f150 with a 302/e4od and grab that harness to work properly in this situation. you can reuse the the flexplate that is on the 5.0 it will work fine for the e4od. you will need the 5.0 Y pipe as well since the 5.8 is wider on your bronco it wont fit properly. everything else should be fine. but again why are you doing this?

Actually.. the 5.8 engine harness will plug right into the 5.0, all the sensors are in the same relative location. The 5.8 computer should also run the motor, though it may be a bit rough until it has adjusted to the motor. Unless this is an absolute zero budget swap a cam upgrade on the 5.0 is highly recommended.

the 5.0 has a knock sensor, i guess you could not have that hooked up in which case the 5.8 harness would work.

I am doing this swap because I have a running 302 out of an 89. The 351 is junk, blew a head gasket and the kid drove it until it stopped. A briggs and stratton would be an upgrade from an 700 pound knocking engine. I don't care about mileage as I will put on roughly 1000 miles per year. It will only be used for plowing snow on the farm. Power will also be no problem low range works fine.

The 5.8 is a different firing order. The ecm wouldn't run the motor, it would only spit and sputter. I tried the ecm out of the 89 and no luck....it ran fine in the other truck so I ordered a used ecm for a 92 with a 302 and an E4od. I did use the harness out of the 92, otherwise the plugs for the trans wouldn't be there. Did a 92 302 have a knock sensor also because my winsor harness doesn't have a plug for one. I will post when I get a chance to try the other ecm.

92 should still be the same SD system, but it is being used on a smaller motor. The problem comes in the air flow and fuel management plan of the computer. The 351 has more volume of air flow and without a Mass air system the computer will believe it is a normally operating 351 and not the smaller displacement 302. The computer doesnt control the firing order, that is set by the distributor, and the bank fire system of the 302 and 351 are exactly the same. In the past I thought a 302 and 351 computer could be used but after referring to fordfuelinjection, books, and this site the two computers would not accept such a change. You could also use the engine wiring harness from the 89 302 in the 92 as long as the engine plugs into the harness, the E4OD trans connects into the computer from a seperate harness and the knock sensor input is ignored on the 351 harness. Find yourself a 302 E4OD computer so the motor will at least not choke on the fuel, but then again the O2 sensor should help manage it.

Just thinkin about that knock sensor. Since the 351 harness doesn't have the plug for it what would happen if I just didn't use one. If it is nessesary how can I wire it in, I do not have a harness for a 92 302 e40d. The only harnesses I have are an 89 302 C-6, and a 92 351 e4od. I really don't want to spend any more on this project. Can it (knock Sensor) be wired into the 351 harness is the million dollar question.

So.. here's a question, what plug firing order do you have the 5.0 wired for.. it should be 15426378.. not the 5.8 firing order.

How did you address the TFI issue, the '89 has it on the distributor and the '92 should be fender mounted.

P.S. adding a knock sensor won't be to hard, but even without it the worst it'll do is set a code.

I keep forgetting that the newer bodystyle put the TFI on the fender, mine has it on the distributor.
