Were you hoping that ChaseTruck was going to get flammed?
The guys in this thread all get along, so probably not going to see much of a disagreement here.
Besides, the Cummins, is a "Cummins, not a ford, and heak, the PowerStroke is also not a Ford, it is a Navistar International Corp, also known as "International Truck and Engine Corp.
Just because they are in Fords, does not necessarilly make them ford engines.
Run what you got! As long as it runs, and runs well........
Any engine beats no engine at all, and I am happy to see a running truck cruising, over a dead old ford waiting to be put out of its misery.
Keep em on the road, whatever it takes!

They do still offer a Cummins engine in the F-650 and F-750. But they also offer the CAT in those medium duty trucks as well.

I expected to get flamed a bit and did the short reply with that intent. But luckily none of the diehards came in here and climbed all over me, so this will die a mellow, quiet death.
As to the "Ford owning Cummins" - not so. They purchased 10% of stock some years back and have since sold ALL of it I believe.
Also 75F350 already argued my point on this one. A cummins is no more a DODGE motor than a Powerjoke (no offense Ed) is a FORD motor. They are made by other companies and put into these vehicles.
To truthfully answer the original question about motor choice:
I found a Dodge donor cheap, and it has the 12v Cummins motor that is an EASY swap. These cummins motors make decent power for CHEAP (I can almost double the stock HP for under $100), they get great gas mileage, they run forever, they are physically smalled than the powerjokes and they are a 1 wire fire - so no wiring headache (been there done that).
For anybody interested I started a swap thread here https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...-crew-cab.html
Now back on topic for this thread - I wanna see if the d60 front end worked out

Back on topic. Could the older (76) low pinion, dana 60 be purchased cheap, replace outer 19 spline axle shafts and hubs, and be a low cost alternate to a 78 dana 60 with reasonable strength? Or is it not worth it? Too many other weaknesses?

I do not believe anyone was ever offended here, and no ford owners were injured during the making of this thread, lol.
Anyway, the 76 D60 axle I thought had 30 spline inner axles. Regardless, the strength in these axles comes from the high pinion design, and the thicker tube design, and larger u-joints.
Almost not a benifit to try to build one from an existing low pinion unit. It will never be as strong as a high pinion axle.
Matter of fact, I would venture to say, that I would rather install a high pinion D44, before I spent a ton of dough tryiing to build a low pinion D60. Just not worth the case, even if you already have the low pinion unit.
Just my opinion, but even if a duck dresses like the mighty eagle, it is still just a duck.

After looking through Proeliator's gallery on how he did his swap, I think I'm going to try to mimic his idea instead of getting the shackles offset. It looks as if he used a stock srping hanger, and put a shackle in place of the spring. Very simple, but very good idea. Ive been lookin for a couple hours now but cant seem to find any hangers similar to the one he used. All the ones I can find are made to bolt to the side of the frame, rather than the bottom. Anyone know where I can find some like these?
