Mystery Plug

While changing my oil today, I noticed a bit of seepage from the flush mounted rubber plug on the bottom of the tranny bellhousing directly above where the stabilizer bar crosses over. What is this plug for? My repair book makes no mention of it. Noticed the same on my son's truck, so this must be fairly common. I wiped it clean and will keep an eye on it. Truck is still under warranty, if it gets any worse I'll bring it in. Anybody know what it's for, or what's behind it?

I'm thinking maybe it's a drain plug for the torque converter?

Its more of a cover than a plug. Pop it out you will see the bottom of the torque converter. If the converter has a drain plug you would access it through the hole. When you have an engine or transmission leak the fluid will usually collect in that area.

when I bought my 05 super cab with the 5.4 the oil level was a little over full and the rubber plug you mentioned would be a little wet (engine oil ) it will weep out the rear main seal and run down inside the bell housing. my first oil change filled level just below full and kept an eye on it and the wetness went away these engine may be very sensitive to overfilling. the rubber plug has ben dry for almost 5,000 miles. now if it is red fluid than it is trany input shaft seal.

Thanks for the tip, man. There's really no visible fluid, just a light stain like maybe a little weeped out, can't even tell if its tranny fluid or oil. I keep my truck clean, so I easily spot anything that even hints of a fluid leak. Don't think it's an overfilling problem, I put in exactly 6qts. with filter (4.6). Registers just below full mark on dipstick. I'll just keep an eye on it.
