speed-density vs. mass air

I have an 88 f150 supercab, 5.0 & 5speed 4wd. since i got it in february i have steadily increased the mileage from 13 to about 16 avg. here a while back i grabbed a mass air flow sensor off a 94 e150 of my dads, and while 90 percent of its 330,000 miles were all highway it consistenly got 19-20 mpg. i was planning on putting the mass air onto my 88, but before i buy a computer and start rewiring, is it really gonna make a difference? im trying to be realistic and am not expecting it to get 20 mpg if i do, but 1 or 1.5 would be nice, anything over about .75 would make it worth it. any opinions or suggestions?

since i have bought the truck i have cleaned the k&n, changed the oil in engine and tranny, replaced the horrible u joints (), set tire pressures the the rated max of 45, covered the bed with a tarp (poor mans tonnue cover) shift religiously at 2000rpm and try not to go over 65 mph.

My mileage went down after converting to mass air, but there was an issue I never could track down. Others have reported increases, but I do not know a hard number as to how much it went up. Regardless of which system is running, I'm not sure that you'll be able to get much better than 20 from a 5.0.

My 94 5.0/E4OD/4x4 F-150 got about 12 city and 15 hwy with the sequential firing MAF system. Speed density, which is also bank firing may be inferior in theory, but unless you are into making mods, like a different cam, works just fine. I wouldnt bother. I think Ford upgraded the system for emissions reasons only, as the CNG engines still retained speed-density with bank-firing injectors.
