Improving performance on an '89 f-250 7,3

Improving performance on an '89 f-250 7,3

Howdy ya'll,
I finally got me an '89 f-250, 4x4, ext cab, reg bed, 7,3litre last fall. It was my first ever diesel, since I used to be all anti-diesel, -but gas trucks are hard to come by over here (could get a newer one but out of prize range..), I used to have an '85 f150 300cid which I sold as i moved to Texas in '04. As I deported myself in '07 it was never a question to buy anything else but a truck again.
My current truck is as close to my deam truck as i've ever been, but the lack of performance is bothering me. I installed a K&N air filter, without noticing any difference.

(I actually recently added Marvel Mystery Oil, that where to be mixed in the fuel tank that should clean fuel pump, injectors and such, -I do reccoment this though, -as i felt the engine was kinda 'sludgish' -it actually felt more responsive afterwards )

So now I wonder how to enhance the performance of it?
Supercharger? twin turbos? what would be the right parts, and where to get it?
f-250's on www.youtube . perform burnouts like no other, but my truck doesn't.
If a queer four sylinder jap crap car can, then so at least should a big, brute american 7,3 liter v8 do.

best rgds

siraleks,
Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.

A turbo is the most cost effective power upgrade for an IDI engine.
HP increases of about 50% are possible.
In stock form, the IDI is limited to about 15 PSI boost for the 7.3.
So a single turbo, ATS or Banks is plenty.

Higher boost requires internal engine mods, or the head gaskets don't last very long.

Remember that 4 cylinder car don't weigh 4 tons like your truck does.

With the present cost of tires, I do my best to never spin the tires unless I am in mud or snow.

Yep, a turbo is the best thing, but if you don't have the finances to go that route, increasing your exhaust size and intake flow will help quite well also. I am running 3.25 at the narrowest after the y-pipe, which I also reworked, and increased the intake to a 4" tube to match the plastic hose to the air cleaner, and draw air from behind the grille to also get the benefit of forced air from the grille area. It has helped quite a bit, because this truck was also doggy when I got it, not so much any more.

Why thank you for the inputs, I will look into it.
so an ATS or Banks turbo with 15 PSI is what to look for.
What brand exhaus would you recommend though? flowmaster? megaflow?
any clues of where to look up dealers on the net?

again thanks

FORD MEGA CAB!!! is starting off with a positive reputation.
Banks is bankspower.com Banks Power | ’83-93 Ford 6.9 & 7.3L >> SidewinderŪ Turbo System
Hears an example of the kit i purchesed and made big difference. As for trucks on youtube, you need to make sure they are IDI and not a powerstroke (strokers came in 94 1/2ish) but the body style looked the same up into 97. So them guys doing burnouts all over in their truck probably have a stroker and is programed and a few mods and since we can't just hook up a comptuer and turn the fuel up, A modifide powerstroke runs great.

As for the 4 cylinder cars as mentioned above, not only are they lighter but they turn how many rpms??? I bet their torque numbers aren't near what a diesels is. Hook 8-10k lbs to that and see how much power it has getting on the toll road at 75 mph. also turning that many rpms with a load all the time i wonder how long that engine would last before its wore out. These make most their usable power in the lower rpm range. These diesels also will not turn very many rpms (3300rpm max). Different ball game with the older diesels compared to gassers. Other than that, A turbo will work great on that truck. This engine will last you along time too. 350k miles on up. If it ever makes it with the price of diesel though.
