Whats the deal with the recall on mid 90's+ vehicles?

My 96 F150 is blowing the #13 fuse and smoking the wiring attached to the master cyclinder. This had happened before and I thought I had fixed the problem by disconnecting the cruise control, and getting that new part/wiring harness that threads into the master cyclinder.

What did they do to fix the recalled cars? Ive only had the truck a few months, so I wasn't up to date on any recalls.

Any input would be helpful. I will try to get it towed to Ford tomorrow, but its backed in against a curb, and the #13 fuse control the shift interlock as well. Without the fuse in, hopfully it wont burn to the ground in the mean time. =/

Thanks

There is no need to tow the truck. To bypass the shift interlock, turn the key forward one click, place the shifter in neutral, and start the engine. Then drive off. Procedure is in the owner's manual. Replacement manuals are downloadable from Ford's website if your original is missing.

You have to disconnect the connector on switch on the master cylinder, not the cruise module to protect the truck.

MANY previous discussions regarding the recall can be found by SEARCHing for keyword "05S28".

Check with your dealer. Certain vehicles got a harness that was improper for the vehicle and did not protect against a shorted switch. These vehicles were recalled yet again.

Thanks.

So leaving the wiring on the master cyclinder unhooked will not cause any the shorts, for sure? It was unhooked when I stuck a new fuse in, and it immediatly flamed up at the connector and blew the fuse.

It sounds like you have a short circuit unrelated to the recall. The recall was for the pressure switch in the master cylinder shorting to ground through the brake fluid, causing a fire.

I drove to the dealership w/o any incidents( harness unhooked, no #13 fuse). Everything is going to be covered by the recall and should be ready tomorrow. Thanks guys.

That switch stays hot even when the engine is not running.

I realize that, but from his description, the wire was melting even while unplugged from the brake pressure switch.
