New TSB regarding recall CPS

New TSB regarding recall CPS
Found this on another site. Looks like Ford is just beginning to figure out there's a problem with the grey CPS that we've known about for a while.
1203 - SOME 1997 THROUGH 2003 MY 7.3L VEHICLES MAY EXHIBIT A PHANTOM P0284, P0281, P0278, P0275, P0272, P0269, P0266, AND/OR P0263 DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODE (DTC)
SOME 1997 THROUGH 2003 MY 7.3L VEHICLES MAY EXHIBIT PHANTOM P0284, P0281, P0278, P0275, P0272, P0269, P0266, AND/OR P0263 DIAGNOSTIC TROUBLE CODES (DTC) WITHOUT DRIVABILITY SYMPTOMS IN CYLINDER CONTRIBUTION TEST (CCT) ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A NEW STYLE (GRAY) CMP SENSOR. THE NEW STYLE SENSOR WOULD HAVE BEEN INSTALLED UNDER SAFETY RECALL 07S57. ENGINEERING IS CURRENTLY WORKING ON A RESOLUTION TO ELIMINATE THE PHANTOM CODES.
So far they only say that they are "phantom" codes, but some trucks actually do develop a miss with the grey CPS. Seems more than just phantom to me.

Good find, Pocket. Sure seems like they need to listen to the guys that drive these rigs everyday, how long has everyone in here been saying," uh, we have a problem!" It's too bad for the many folks that don't know too much about PSD's or keep up on such stuff. I actually run IH cps's in both my rigs, so no problems here, but Ford definately droped the ball on this deal....

Maybe I'm just in a glass half full kind of mood today, but I like seeing this. I was concerned Ford would ignore this issue since most of these trucks are out of warranty and any repairs performed to fix these "phantom codes" would be at the customer expense.
Thanks for the update Curtis.

I'm with Rick on this one. I was a little gun shy about replacing my black CPS with a gray one after reading about the "side effects". I have not had any issues with the gray one, so far. I bought an extra to carry for emergencies and to offer help to a fellow powerstroker, if disabled. I will continue to carry the black CPS, "just in case".

As for the newer vehicles, Ford does invite people like Ken Payne to several pre-release gatherings to share some inside information on what's is coming out next. How do you think Ken is able to write the in depth articles with his opinions on them as soon as a truck is released? We also seem to always have the correct new sections added to the site before a motor or truck is released.

I never went to get the recall done because of all the problems i read about. I have a black cps in mine now that was put in at 98k. ( i now have 134k) I also have a spare black one that I carry with me. I figured I was good for a while with the black ones. Seems the grey one does cause some problems, but i didnt want to take the chance since my truck is running good already anyway. My theary is if it aint broke dont fix it... Jeff

I wonder how long it will be before the black sensors are hard to find. I’ll just have the tech give me the old sensor and I’ll keep it in the glove box.

I'd like to correct Jeff's theory here. I think he meant if it ain't broke throw a spare in the glove box to be on the safe side.
I'm with Rick on running the gray CPS. I've got one in mine with no issues. I've got 2 other 7.3's at work that still have the black one. I never took them in for the recall. You can get a new CPS from one of our sponsors for less than $20 to go in the glove box. I figure the $20 is worth the time spent waiting at the dealership.

I took my truck in for the recall shortly after I bought it, and when the tech crawled under the truck and noticed a nearly new CPS in there already he handed me the new grey one in the bag and sent me on my way. It lives in the glove box now, I wonder if there is any way to test it to see if it's a good one or a bad one besides throwing it in?
