blown turbo questions

Hello, I just blew my turbo. I`m running an sct tuner.
I`m about 50 kms from closest ford dealer and about 100 kms from BD diesel in abbotsford bc. How far would you drive with a blown turbo, I am towing a 20 ft cargo trailer with 2 quads and a bunch of other stuff in it

would you go to ford and just get a new stock turbo from them or go to BD for their aftermarket one, which would probably require more upgrades.

also would you try to drive it or get it towed

any help would be appreciated

When you say blew the turbo I am assuming that it jut builds no boost, or does it over boost. I know that when my I/C pipe blew off it had no power so I would say check that first. Aslo there could be a crack/split in the intercooler as well, so check those too. Also what year is your truck and anyother symptoms you could describe may help us help you. As for an A/M turbo, I believe that you are correct in saying you would need other upgrades but I am not too sure on that as I havent done my research. Also you may beable to get i covered under warranty if it still has one.

I would tow it as these trucks are absolute dogs without a turbo. I am not sure if any damage can occurr by driving it without a turbo other than it couldnt pull a greasy string out of a cats a$$.

Good Luck

Sarge

when it blew it sounded like a tire blowing out (sort of) I was towing my trailer up a hill. It now produces zero boost.

I drove it down hill with hazard lights about 20 kms back to hope bc where I am now. Down hill it was no problem but uphill I had to floor it just to get to 50kmh.

The drive the rest of the way will be fairly flat but I`ll be on the trans canada hwy. with a speed limit of 100kmh.

Go out and check the I/C hoses. Thats what happened when mine blew off. Look around the intake elbo where the hose and elbow meet for oil spray. If there is spray there the hose has come off. Also look down at the intercooler and see that one too. Give it a tug you may find that is all it is. I am sure that the turbo hasnt blown. I am also sure that you may have bown the I/C hose off. Alos what year is your truck?

thanks sarge its an 07 with 80000kms on it, I do have extended warranty but I already had a head gasket repaired under warranty because of my tuner so I definatley will be repairing or paying for it myself.

I`m going to head outside now to check the hoses although I`m not 100% sure I`ll be able to figure out exactly what I`m looking for.

I definately saw some black oil around the turbo area when it first went

Look right next to the coolan fan shroud, where it says Power Stroke in red leters, there is an elbo right there and a boot and a pipe. The clamp on the boot probably loosened up and caused the pipe to come out of the coupler under high boost. If that is the case you nees to remove the intercooler pipe, and the coupler to the intake elbow and clean it with brake parts cleaner and then reassemble it. DO NOT put any lube on the pipes or coupler as it will pop off again. If that is not the problem, follow the pipe down to the Radiator area and check the intercooler itself. Some have ad the Plastic tank separate from the fins. Check both sides as I have never seen picturs of where this breaks.

Hope this helps and you can fix it where you are. I will check back in the a.m. to see how you made out.

Well Sarge I would like to say thank you a thousand times.

The clamp had come off of the boot where the intercooler connects to the pipe between it and the turbo, basically right where you said.

Can the tuner cause this or could it happen with or without one

Regardless, once I get home on to my own computer I will become a supporter to this site as it has helped me out on numerous occasions

Thanks again!

Frisco,

BD is not only a performance turbo builder we are also a complete OEM turbo rebuild facility as well. If you can get the truck here we have some great pricing and will take care of ya!

Frisco,

It can happen with or without a tuner, Just clean the pipes and boot real good with some brake clean and you sould be good to go. Also go to the tech folder and do the CCV reroute and that will help with all the oil in the intake which will help eleviate the pipe blowing off. As BD said get the truck to them and they will hook you up with some of those upgrades you have questions about.

Thanks for the Rep Points guys...just doing my job

IMO... our CCV kits are one of the most under rated products we sell, it works great and looks like a factory install. Having a boot blow off is pretty common, especially around here and too often a bad start to a good weekend trip.

Anyone use BD's CCV kit? I've been thinking of doing the reroute but would like a clean install w/ some sort of a filter so it's not dripping on the ground. Sounds like you found the problem Frisco. I've also had boots blow off 3 times and that was before getting custom tunes. I was stock. Watch for overboosting if you have a guage. You may have a sticky turbo.
