Timing Chain ??

Hello all, I finally got around to checking my timing with a light.Took the spout
connector off set base timing to 10 degrees and heard what sounded like
the chain slapping. When I had it set higher only slight noise, any thoughts
before I tear into it, and any gotcha's I should look out for.

Thanks In Advance

Decided to tear it down and replace the chain. Have a couple of questions.
When I reseal everything, do I use the rubber piece that's sticking out from
the oil pan,or just use RTV over top of it? Also , should I replace the keyway
on the crankshaft, because I just pulled the old gear off by hand?

Thanks In Advance.

I think the rubber piece sticking out from the oil pan is the oil pan gasket. You need to keep that in its position, and re-seal it with RTV at the joints and mating surfaces. If it's really old gasket, it may be brittle, and probably should be replaced. That's quite chore, and could require separating the transmission from the engine.

yes, replace the crank pulley key.
also replace the front crank seal. may or may not come with the front cover gasket as a set.
replace the crank and cam gear plus the chain, the tensioner and chain guide. Cloves makes a set with all. 3L does not have tensioner and guide
front cover gasket sets come with cover gasket, water pump gasket, front crank seal.

examine the vibration damper front seal run area for a wear groove from front seal. if worn, replace the damper or use a Timken Quik Sleeve repair seal kit

examine the crank end and the pulley hole for wear. when you put it back on, make sure the pulley is tight on the crank and with NO wobble.
drop the flywheel tranny inspection cover or remove the starter to jam the flywheel with a piece of wood on the fw teeth and block
tighten the front crank bolt to specs with a torque wrench only. too loose is dangerous and too tight can cause the end of crank to snap off.
