fuel pump ?

I've linked to a pic of my fuel pump. There are 2 fittings which I removed and cleaned. The one in question is the one full of dirt. What, if anything is supposed to be attached to this fitting. Obviously nothing was prior to me taking it apart hence the dirt. The fuel line was attached to the fitting above which is obscured by my thumb. What belongs on this one?

I think it was for the vacuum wipers, or maybe not. If I remember correctly my 54 merc car had a fitting off of the fuel pump for the wipers.
