Cool 87 4.9L just shut off while driving

Yeah I have an 87 F150 with the 4.9L and its a 4 speed. But yesterday as I was driving the motor just cut out, it didn't sputter or choke or anything. I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem and knows what it is or if anyone knows if its a fuel or ignition problem. Thanks

Would he have the dreaded TFI ignition?

Have you checked for spark?

No spark & a TFI ignition is pretty much the TFI module. Were you on railroad tracks in front of a fast freight? That's usually when they fail, so maybe you got lucky.....

I agree, you could check for spark but it's most likely the ignition module on the side of the distributor. About forty dollars at Advance Auto Parts. You need a special tool to remove and reinstall the module.

That's the tfi module. Wrench $10. But check for spark first, if you have spark, go to fuel.

Wait wait before all of this... Do you have any power? If you don't, your alternator died. If it cranks though, forget what I just said...

i had this same problem with 87 f150 in line six but it happened when we had some rain i was driving down freeway and it justr died so i messed with wiring some and it started then 3 days later after it rained again it died (at the worst possible spot 2 lane state route with no where to pull off )had to get it towed it took me 8 days i changed everything ignition module, distributer, fuses cap rotor wires i finnally traced it down to on driver side fender well 2 relays one brown one green i tried buying new ones from auto parts store but they couldnt match them so i went to bone yard and searched i got them for 5 bucks those 2 relays control power to fuel pumps and ingnition and injectors that may be your problem just a thought

timing chain / gear , before you start adding a bunch of parts take it to a shop and get diagnosed , just bought one that "died" , no explosions or noise , the guy had just put about 350 bucks in parts on it , took it to my mechanic and it was what I suspected , timing gear and chain , cost $550 to get it repaired.
