Anyone here good with brakes???

ive been having this brake problem for about 2 months now. ive replaced the master cyl. twice, the p- valve, some of the hard lines and the rear rubber brake line. but the rear drums keep hanging up. I think the rear pads have worn down to where it dosnt hang up as much, but i can still sit at a red light with out holding the brakes. I still have to make sure the rear pads are on right, but is there anything else it could be?

After all you've done, the only thing I can think of is the parking brake cable hanging up. Or weak brake return springs in the drums. After 30 some odd years of loyal stopping service, I'd probably change the springs and all the other hardware in the drums.

I have a hardware kit on back order with one of the sponsors. I guess i could check the EBrake cable. But i though i adjusted it. How would I be able to tell if it is the EBrake?

Have your assistant mechanic apply the p brake and watch to see if the cable releases at both the adjustment Y and the drums. You may have to do this a few times to see all the points. Also something else to check would be the self adjusters. If they are difficult to turn with the adjusting finger pried away from it , it could need to be freed up. When you adjusted the p brake , did you adjust it to where it catches about half way... or does it catch at the top? It should catch or stop at about half way to the bottom.

Just take care with it. Wouldn't want them to get too hot. If they are the glued on type they could come loose and really give you a STOPPING experience. I've been there before.

That's good....You musta got a good set. I hope that I've helped you with the project. I love to tinker with the older models. These newer ones are a pain to do anything with. Have fun with it. If I can help some more just let me know.

I always make it a point when I do drum brakes to tear down the self adjusters and clean them really well. When they go back together, I use lithium grease on the barrels and threads, then check to make sure they turn well.

All rubbing points need cleaning and lube too - the ones on the backing plate and where the ends of the shoes rub on the adjusters and anchor slots.

Last step when everything is assembled is a brake adjustment. Turn them all the way tight so the tire won't turn either way, then back off the adjuster until you barely hear them touch and don't drag with the tire being turned by hand.

If all this was done - the E-Brake is about all it can be.
