How do you decode the Engine Number?

My Haynes manual for the Ranger/B-series PU says on page 0-5 that there is an engine number on a label on the driver's side valve cover, and sure enough there is......my number is 8G 944 BA.

However, nowhere in the manual can I find the decoder ring.....what does it mean? Is there any information there that is not found in the VIN number?

I did a search on this site and could only come up with VIN info....did I miss something?

YHS,
