Is the DPF required by the EPA? Yup. Meaning it's illegal to remove. I've been stopped by the DOT enough in my life driving commercial trucks to know it's not a good idea.
I am familiar with the regen process - there is a lot less output overall with regen than just letting it go out the tailpipe continuously. Different thing. Somewhat foolish? Maybe.
Just think about it - wouldn't Ford remove the DPF themselves to improve mileage instead of adding an improved air-dam on 2008's Job 2?
Can't, because it's required by the EPA.
Anyway...

Finding a Ford Dealership that won't void your warranty for a DFP deletion and aftermarket program is rare. Most will drop you like a bad habit.
DFP technology is still in it's infancy, much like catalytic converters on gas engines in the mid-70's. Give the engineers a few years and they'll figure out how to include a DFP system into your truck without killing fuel mileage.

1) It WILL void your warranty.
2) It IS illegal
3) It probably will help your fuel mileage.
As far as finding a dealer that will still warrant it, you're just kidding yourself. Unless you get it in writing, that dealership can fire that service advisor anytime, and even then, dealerships are closing left and right. Mine closed, as did the Dodge dealership just around the corner. Then where will you be?
Paying through the butt, that's where.

Just do it! All these threads end up the same way with the debate being between those willing to make changes and those who really want to preserve their warranty and are jealous/envious of those that make mods. There are lots of mod friendly dealers out there and its all about forming a good working relationship with one!
The fuel mileage is just too pathetic not to take matters into your own hands on those trucks. I have a 6.0 with an SCT and would have the same programmer with the test pipe installed very, very soon in the ownership experience on a 6.4
