Missouri laws on stacks???

I was just at a muffler shop here in missouri and ask the guy for a price for putting stacks on my '00 psd and he basically went off about how they aren't legal and it won't pass inspection... Does anyone know anything about this stuff? I see people with them all over town and other places with state plates. Got any input?

in NC the exaust has to exit the vehicle below 2 feet or above 11 feet to be "legal" I and many others run stacks on our pickups and have never had any problem. I guess it's just not worth the Troopers or the inspection place's time.

Alot of guys run stacks here so i,m assuming that it not a problem here but maybe that shop owner doesn't do it, doesn't mean others don't. I would call around and ask other shops. Check the local and state laws online to get informed. Good luck..

My friend lives out in the kansas city area of MO and her boyfriend runs stacks on his truck. Dont really see why it would be a problem. I know in PA the exhaust has to exit behind the passenger compartment and not anywhere under the body.

I went to college in Missouri. Seemed like everyone and their mom had stacks down there.

I returned to Iowa and I maybe see one truck with stacks a month.... kinda funny.

I guess I should have given a little more info on what he said... He said if you have stacks on a truck the new law is that it has to have gaurds on it like a semi so that noone can just walk up and burn themselves, another thing he said that every truck has to have a cat and muffler well then I told him that mine didn't have a cat when it came out stock in 2000. He was sure it did and blah blah he wasn't gonna be told anything else. Anyways does anyone know where I could find an updated version on laws like this???

Google maybe? Or you could try asking someone at another exhaust shop.

called the local shop and asked about the stack install and the cat. and guards.he said by law that you are not to alter(gut or remove)the cat. dew to emissions laws, but for years that didn't come from the factroy with one he didn't see a prob. with it.and as for the guards he said in our safety minded world that would be nice but being that half of it is down inside the bed and that you have to reach up to touch the stack he would leave that up to you.

oh yah he said you only grab hot exhaust once!

Not sure about the legality of Stacks in your state...but I can vouch that the 00 trucks did NOT come with a cat! Don't give that shop a penny more of your money

said it before:

1 APR 1978 Federal clean air laws went into effect mandating that the user CAN NOT MODIFY any portion of the emmission or exhaust controls or hardware.

Good thing: there is no money or personnel available for enforcement, but you can be cited by your state police for non-compliance. There does not appear to be a fine structure but you'd have to return the vehicle to factory specs and get it certified for compliance.

would you get caught? probably not, but the shop wasn't taking any bets you were gonna get them busted and a possible ten grand fine.
