Is there a short vs long waterpump for a 289?

In a V belt setup? I want a short one if possible.
If so, what years/model would I be looking for?

My situation is trying to fit a smallblock(5.0) into my '36 and trying to save as much room as possible without hacking into the firewall.

The 5.0 I have (from a'93 Cougar) will require me to hack in and recess the firewall about 2.5 inches...an electric fan will save me about an inch though...but...

I have a 289 as well that I'd like to assemble the front accessories on to see if I ran a Vbelt and a short pump (assuming there is a shortpump) to see what kind of clearance it would get me...then just transfer everything over to the 5.0.

Thanks.

I am not aware of a short vs long water pump. I've heard of this for chebbie though. Oh and dont forget that your 5.0 should have a reverse rotation warer pump, and 289 a standard rotation.

Well the short water pump definately won't work on an early 289. What year is yours?

You probably would have to swap over the short pump with its timing cover to the 289. Also I don't think it has provision for a mechanical fuel pump.

As for V-belt drive, I don't think that was offered with the short water pump so you'll have to improvise with spacers and the like.

I'm not sure of the year, if I recall, it came from a 66 or 67 Mustang, so it should be the later 289.

Are you saying the "short pump" is what I currently have on my 5.0 (serpentine setup)...i/e I can't lose any inches by going to some V-belt setup?

Thanks.

Short water pump

No, I'm not saying that you currently have the short water pump and cover set. You will have to determine that. The short set was used in some later applications, I'm not sure what though. Possibly your Cougar is one of them, but I don't know.

The short timing cover and pump set is available new from Ford, here is the link to it:

Ford Racing Performance Parts [M-8501-A50*]

Note that Ford says it fits 289/302/351W, and that it's about 1-3/4" shorter than old style pumps.

You're awesome my friend!...looks like(but I'll have to remeasure) that what I have is the best (short) that I'll get.

Thanks so much for the link...now it gives me a definitive way to proceed.

PS..rep points coming your way!

Short pump and cover

Your very welcome!

The suggested retail price of $205 seems very reasonable for a trick setup like this... a new waterpump and new timing cover!

Well, went and measured my 5.0, it's right at 27 inches from the back of the block to the front of the waterpump pulley, so looks as though I won't be able to get any shorter...although I'll run an electric fan to save a scooch as well...once i pull the WP off I'll take a look at taking it apart and lopping off the end of the shaft where the fan hub screws on...might get me a bit more.

Thanks again for the link, least now I know what i have to work with and can get this thing moving!
