heater core replacment

I guess the computer is the thing under the plastic covering over the heater core? How do I get the adapter that is over the lines coming out of the core which have the hoses attached to them. I have removed the hoses but I can not figure out how to get the adapters off. They must come off because they will not fit through the holes in the firewall. Special tool? I tried to remove the blower assembly but the air conditioner evaporator now is off to the side and I can not get it back in the plastic case. I know the the plastic assembly under the dash MUST come out but HOW? I have the nuts loose(5). how does the fresh air inlet come out? I guess I need a BIG book. The book I have showes the heater core but NOT mine.

Special tools for hater core removal???
I'm in the same boat as Thomas...I have managed to get the housing off my heater core but it looks like I am going to need special tools to remove the hoses from the heater core bibs. Is this true? I am worried I am going to crush the fittings when I hack away at it with my tools.
PLEASE ADVISE...and thanks in advance

I came to the site with the exact same problem. I have an 87 E-150 with the 302, and A/C.
I'm trying to get my heater core out for replacement because it has a small leak and is blowing moist air/coolant/fog onto my windshield.
I followed my haines manual, but the haines apparently refers to NON-a/c vehicles from what i gather. I have a/c.
from the inside the van, i got off (in order): computer cover, computer, blower cover, and blower.
from under the hood: battery out, air intake box out, heater hoses off heater core stems.
i believe that the entire heating box needs to come out, and get cracked open to get the heater core out out of the case. this seems possible by the removal of 4 screws from the inside the van. then it looks like the heater case slides out, into the van.
the BIG problem is that the air conditioner has its own core within the same heater case. the a/c core is connected to hard lines in the engine compartment. i really don't want (actaully i don't know how) to disassemble a/c systems.
so, i ended up putting everything back together, and unless i can figure something out by monday, i'll have to take it to a shop - which i dread considering the time it took me to do what i actually was able to do.
so, any heater core experts wanna give your input?

I don't have a van, and I have never worked on climate control systems in one. But am no stranger to heater cores and A/C evaporators on other vehicles.
From the '94 shop manual, it seems that the A/C evaporator is on the engine side of the firewall, and the heater core is in the cabin. That is like the older trucks and large cars.
They have very little info on heater core removal, but here it is:
Heater Core Removal:
1) Remove the inlet and outlet heater water hoses from the heater core in engine compartment. Plug heater water hoses with a 5/8 inch diameter plug.
2) Remove the snap in modesty panel that runs around the lower edge of the instrument panel.
3) Remove the six screws from the heater core covers located on both sides of the case underneath the instrument panel. Remove heater core covers.
4) Remove heater core and heater core case seal from the case.
So it sounds like once you get the heater core covers off, you should then be able to see the actual heater core to remove it from the van.
Hope it makes sense to you when looking at it!
