Smile 460 quit running

hi all. my 89 f250 with 460 quit running this morning altogether. it whirls over but sounds like no spark. i put my code scanner on it and it doesnt do anything at all. it says if no codes come up or nothing happens, to refer to vehicle service manual for "no codes troubleshooting" which naturally, i dont have. has anyone dealt with this before? thanks in advance. matt

If it were me diagnosing it, I would first start by pulling a plug, grounding it to any available chassis part, and turning over the engine to see if it sparks. If it did, spark, I would use a fuel pressure gauge to make sure the fuel is at the proper PSI. If fuel and spark were good, I would check the timing during cranking with a timing light.

If none of those were the problem, I would have the battery checked and charged. It is possible for the battery to die enough that it turns over but doesn't have enough juice to start the engine (turns over too slowly I think).

That should help you narrow down the problem to a specific system.

Does Rotor Turn

Hi, I had a similar problem a few years ago. But my oil pump froze up, and it twisted the shaft from the distributor to the oil pump like a barber pole until the camshaft gear broke. So along with checking for spark, you might pull the cap off the distributor and see of the rotor is turning while you crank the motor.

Fuseable link, oh yes, that would certainly cause that. I did that on an old Chrysler one time. So watch for ground out's before you tap a new fuse into it. If it blows right away, you know something on that line is grounded out.
