straight cut timing gears for flatty v-8's

does any one know if you can purchase a timing set for our beloved flatties that has a straight cut gear for the crank as the top one already is ,so she'll whine like a typical gear drive .{ i realize that some of the whine is from the interim / idlers gears on a modern v-8 cant think of what they're called right now .} . i havent seen one yet in honest charlies or some of the other places i got book marked lest i'm overlooking them .

Interesting this should come up, I was just watching the Motor City Flathead 339ci alloy block video on 'Tube, and Mark mentions as one of the features that it uses straight cut timing gears. The smart money IMO would have been to use a chain like every other engine since the '50's, or to stick with the stock 8BA helical gears (why re-invent the wheel??). Straight cut gears aren't particularly good for the distributor, because they have more lash than helical and tend to let timing bounce around.

hmmm ross never thought of that ... but i have never had an issue with a " modern " motor with that issue and a gear drive . i dont think it's gonna be a big concern to me anyway as i dont drive it hard at all . now if i was pushing it hard yep i have had those issues with some of the race cars . erratic spark and misfires , etc. due to it .i think i might go look at his site and check 'em out . it's just a thought as as soon as possible gonna have the radiator recored the radiator tank fixed again , and hopefully new pumps etc. whilst i am that far apart . be a good time to put 'em in if i decide to go that route .

It just occured to me, if you just want some gear noise, put in a stock aluminum cam gear! They're cheap and easy to install (although getting it lined up with the valves all in place is no treat). It makes a noticeable whine but not as much as straight cut.
