Cheap DIY Exhaust

I don't want to pay $100 for an exhaust guy to change my exhaust for me, and I sure don't want to pay $300+ for some cat back system. So my plan is to cut out a hunk of pipe out of my exhaust somewhere between the muffler, and the cats, and just put a tundown on it, all the while leaving all of the exhaust in place except for the pipe I cut out.
I want to leave it all in place because I am to lazy to get rid of it, and it already passed inspection so I got 2 years to save up for an exhaust I want, and maybe if I like it the way it sounds ,I'll just unclamp the turndown and put a pipe back in place until the inspection is done.
Now I have a question about this. Will the exhaust be structurally sound enough on it's hangers to stay in place once a piece of pipe has been compromised. I have no idea how much pipe I need to take out. In fact I haven't even looked under the truck yet. I'm guessing about 6 to 12 inches will sufice.

Or you could just punch some holes in the stock muffler.......

Well I want it to be a muffler less pipe not an exhaust leak, thats good thinking though.

I guess I was too subtle.........I was being sarcastic....
(technicaly, your idea is one giant exhaust leak)

The best way to do what you have in mind would be to get an exhaust cut out. It's just a Y-type joint you would weld into the stock pipe (before the muffler). There are electric, cable and manual type of cut outs. With the electric or cable type you just activate it when you want to bypass the muffler, or put on/take off a block off plate with the manual type. Obvioulsly, this would require you to pry your wallet open, and you seem to be against that.......so hack away........

I knew what you were saying, but I didn't want to be mean or anything. I thought about getting a real quiet but noticeable exhaust setup, and then having a cut out for when I wanted loud, but I think with 4 cats and a quiet cab it's not going to be that loud. That is my ultimate dream setup headers and at least 2 hollowed cats(for sound adding not power cause it makes a 4.6 sound awesome so a 5.4 should sound better), and a 35 or 40 inch glasspack with a cut out just right behind the Y. With the exception of the headers it would still only cost as much as some people's cat back systems. However I'm still thinking about the hack route.

don't hack it. it sounds great at idle w/ no load on it, but sounds like complete junk with any kind of load when cruising around...

just get a muffler for now if you don't have the money for a full catback.

I wish they made offroad midpipes, like for mustangs...
