460 2 Piece Rear Main Seal

1986 460 F250 4x4 T19 Trans

I have had to replace my rear main seal about every 18 months for the last 10 years. It holds back the oil for a while and then the leak is back. I am very careful about getting the seal in carefully and off set the seal mating services about 3/8 inch and RTV sealant where the bearing cap mates.

Do any of you have the same issue? What can be done to stop the oil leaking in these buggers?

I had a 390 that was the same way- the only way I was able to cure it was to remove the engine, flip it over, and remove the crank for the seal install. Its alot of work and sounds like a "no way" idea but working wick seals around the crank just doesnt seem to hold. So, I would say, nature of the beast?

Sounds like you might have a groove worn in the crankshaft where the seal rides. Ended up replacing the crank on an old Chevy that had that problem.
