a/c kinda works. and then doesn't

hey my 06 psd have 26,000 on it and lately the a/c work that great. i havn't driven my truck alot in the past 2 months because of fuel prices. (i commute to work in a honda civic) anyway a/c seem to work some what- just blows cool air, and then a couple miles down the road it blows really cold air like its working. any ideas what is going on with the a/c system. anyone else have this problem

KRDiesel is gaining momentum as a positive member of FTE.
Sounds like it is low on 134a. The AC system is covered under the 3/36

what kind of climate control do you have? is it the fuly electronic control? i have the fully electronic box and it seems to have a mind of its own at times. i took it into ford for that same issue and another where it was blowing out of the windsheild instead of direct and they found a hose not connected under the dash near the passenger side.

the climate control is the standard pkg. that comes on the XLT. not fully electronic. i have the dial turned to cold, and the other dial to a/c or a/c max

I have a 2003 F250 that the A/C comes and goes and over on the A/C forum they said something about removing a shim on the compressor clutch. It seems with wear ( and sometimes without it) the gap on the clutch is too great for the clutch to engage all the time so it intermittantly does'nt work. Apparently removing the shim often brings it back into specs. Hope this helps.

I'm like KRDiesel, I think it is a 134A problem. If you don't already know, when in max-air, the temp control (the blue to red dial) does not have any affect on temperature. in reg ac it works just like it should. that information is in the owners manual. I know THAT is not part of your question, but FIY.
