Here in Vegas you cannot buy red unless you are set up with an account to allow you to do so (tax ID, EIN etc). Not sure if other states are similar but I would suspect so. Joe public cannot just go buy red.

Here you can just go over and fill it up. Don't have to have an account. They might change that due to recent events but as of right now nothing is on the books or proposed to be on the books either.
The red fuel is exactly the same fuel, only dyed red to tell the tax man you haven't paid the taxes. If you are caught BIG $$$ for him. You have to run clear for many tankfulls to get the stain out of the fuel components

They ran out of red fuel one time and I had to have Regular delivered, my tractor has a glass fuel filter you can see through, by the second tank of the green stuff you couldn't tell looking through the glass filter. The fuel was the same until they came out with the new ultra low.

That is probably a big city deal there. Rural areas have red fuel readily available.
It still amazes me that people will pay 30 to 50,000 dollars for a truck and are too lazy to read the owners manuals or try to interpret them to their advantage. Page 29 of my owners manual/diesel supplement/ specifically states not to use off road fuel and also lists additives not to use do to injector damage. Go ahead and play russian roulette with your warranty but please don't take up space here crying about it if your warranty gets voided. I am here for advice, discussion and knowledge not covered in the free manual that came with our trucks. Please no flaming, but this subject has been beat to death and the horse died 3 years ago.
The language in the owners manual refers to not using dyed high sulfer off road fuel. It does not state that you can't use any dyed fuel. As has been correctly stated many times in this thread, the dye simply means its for tax exempt purposes, not that its high sulfer off road fuel.

I'm doing my part to reduce food imports, control rising food costs and help feed the children, my trucks run on 100% petroleum diesel. What are you doing?
Off road fuel also has a higher probability of setting around longer and picking up contaminents. Anyway, do what you want it's your truck and warranty.

Our county road crew (YES, COUNTY), came in complaining that their 6.0 trucks weren't running correctly. Several of the drivers "Danged Fords, we told them not to buy them!". I noticed that they had injector issues. Preliminary checks showed red fuel. NO WARRANTY REPAIR! They were told to only use green fuel, and 4 years later, no injector repairs since.

The term "Off Road" fuel is tossed around freely when talking about dyed fuel. Years ago the dye indicated it was high sulfer fuel not intended for on highway use. Several years ago IRS rules replaced the EPA rules for dyeed fuel. Today the only thing the dye tells you is that the taxes have not been paid on it and its for tax exempt use only.
The Ford manual states this:
" Do not use fuel intended for agricultural use (agricultural fuel is dyed red), home heating oil or any diesel fuel not intended for highway use. Damage to the fuel system, engine and exhaust catalyst can occur if an improper fuel is used."
Note it does not say you cannot use dyed fuel, it only says you can't use fuel not intended for highway use. Agricultural fuel may be dyed red but not all dyed fuel is off road agricultural fuel, in fact very little of it is. Tales of
dyed fuel being substandard or poor quality and not for on highway use are very much outdated.

Tell that to the CHP in Ca. and see what it gets you.
Once again, dyed diesel is legal on road fuel for tax exempt users.
We legally consume more than 100 gallons per day of dyed ULSD fuel in every diesel vehicle we operate on the roads of Missouri, Minnesota and Iowa as we are tax exempt.

Here is the truth of burning red in a 6.0 I have ran it in my 04' and 05' for years, no ill effects. I had it in the dealer full of the stuff when they drained the water sep. -nothing said, I had it in for a replacement injector and only ran 1 tank of clear before it got there, the fuel was clear as the day it was new. And if you get caught with it 1st time its $10 a gal. for whatever you have in the tank, second time its $10,000,3rd time they go back and bill you for all your mileage,at least thats how it is in cal. Now if Ford wants to void your warranty they will, its a out for them. They are supposed to report you if they find it,but face it,if you bought a $50,000 truck from them, they wont say anything, other than "you dont want to get cault with it"My advice is dont do anything half a$$ed,if your going to do it,dont stop till you get cault,at least the ticket will be paid for in your savings.....
Back during katrina the state was running low on Diesel. For a period of time red was sold at retail, Even got a few tanks of blue!!

i dont think the dye is the problem. like was stated before the problem with offroad fuel is mostly moisture or contamination problems more than anything.

That is true, you do need to filter it before it goes into your truck, where I get it there is a filter in line so it catches most of the stuff, one of my buddies at work has a Dodge (good engine in a crappy wrapper) he ran red since new,he took it in when it quit running they found the red and told him he needed a new fuel system beacuse it had dirt in it! And they wouldent cover it,so he let his insurance pick up the $9000 bill!
