Need Help: check engine light on
Here's my problem; 95 F250 with 226,800 miles. 7.3 turbo diesel
Key on and wait to start light is on,no check engine light on,
wait to start light goes out, start engine and check engine light comes on,
truck is running and after 20 seconds when voltage builds to normal it starts to run very rough (have to keep it running with pedal) check engine light goes out but engine is running very rough. I can take it up through the rpm band and it will run smooth and then rough. After about a minute of idle engine will shut down on its own; I can restart but check engine light will come back on and it continues in the same way. I had to replace the small plug on the alternator and splice in a new wire to the big 3 wire plug as the wire was melted into. I did pull the alternator and have it bench tested and it read OK. I purchased a code scanner reader in hopes of pulling a code but can not find anywhere on the truck where to plug it into to test - HELP

There is a stationary empty plug visible under the dash to the right of the ashtray but the scanner I bought (actron cp9015) doesn't fit it. This scanner is for the OB I system so I'm gonna return it and get the cp9025 scanner for the OB II system which has a smaller plug. Their is also a empty plug on the left firewall below the fuse box and near the distrubution box under the hood that is smaller; I need to get a code up so I can get this powerstroke back on the road. The actron website does say that some 94-95 ford models will accept the OB II scanner.

Have you checked your oil level? the hydraulic side of the injector doesnt work well without oil...
will it drive at all?
have you replaced the cam position sensor? might want to try that- even if that's not the problem, it's good to have a spare. that brings up the question- does the tachometer work?
are there any other symptoms?
is it a manual or auto tranny?
do you have any mods?
the voltage thing sounds normal, the voltage drop you're seeing sounds like the glow plugs.
Good luck!

You are OBD-I, so you're going to use the plug under the hood. It sounds like you've located it already, it should say "EEC TEST". That cover slides off to show the test port. Your Actron might have the proper connection to hook up to this port, if not use a paperclip or length of wire to pull codes.

More info on my truck is:
oil level OK / oil change 1000 miles ago
no cam sensor ever installed
tach works correctly
auto tranny
no mods / all OEM Ford
I purchased a OB II scanner (actron CP9125) and it plugs in under the dash to the right of the ashtray. It gave no codes in system and after cranking truck and letting it run for awhile it got better and the check engine light went out and stayed out. I checked voltage at the batteries and the main one read 12.6V and the aux. read 14.3V. My thoughts on this problem is relating back to the alternator wiring plug issue I had and the small plug wire burning into. By the alternator not charging the batteries they finally dropped to a voltgage level that made the check engine light come on and by repairing the wire and the batteries not fully charged the light still would come on even when the alternator was charging but after running the truck awhile the batteries came up and the light finally went out. I'm going to run more tests tonight after work, fully charge the main battery and check voltage at S and I terminal on alternator to see if problem is finally corrected. I will post all updates and thanks to all for their input to my questions.

The diesel engines don't fall under OBDII compliance. They have the connector but they don't have to follow all the rules that their gasser counterparts do. So thats why only certain scanners will work on the diesels. Do you have any friends that have an Edge or Superchip tuner? they will pull codes. Also any snap-on scanner will if there is a local shop that might do it cheaper than Ford.

I will be returning the actron CP9125 scanner today and have had no luck in locating another to read my code. I charged the main battery from 12.6V to 13.5V and she fired up and seemed to do OK. Voltage at main battery while idling was 13.8V and aux battery was 14.5V. Voltage at the one-wire plug on the alternator (stator?) read 8.5V. I read somewhere that this should be 10V with indash gauge so this is confusing. Drove it around the block and it was OK, Vgage read the same as always and no weird throttle response as before in garage. I will post with any new info and I found this on the net while surfing; will this work for our trucks? I just experimented on a 2007 Freestar and it worked perfectly. Check out this link and advise.
