400 Finally Running just needs Adjustment

Hello everyone,
Just wanted to know that after a little over a month I finally got the 78 F-250 running. Now after all the questions got answered for me on this forum I am ready for somemore answers. I put a Edelbrock 1405, on with a edelbrock perrformer intake. When i punch on the throttle already going around 40mph she acts like she is bogging out. I mean it may be the 4 barrels are acting up I just don't know. Also she starts right up when cold, but after taking her out for awhile. Then coming home and shutting her off then trying to restart it won't happen without holding the foot feed to the floor. Is this some timing issue or carb. Thanks beforehand and thanks again for all the answers about a month ago when I was ready to scrap the thing out.

It does sound like too much fuel. Maybe too high a float level. It could also be too little ignition timing lead.

I agree, check the float.
Is it a new carb, or used? It may need calibrating. I would calibrate any carb I put on an engine. It is fun to fine tune the Edelbrocks, and quite easy. Every change you make, you can feel the difference (or smell it! lol)
Might need a metering rod change, jets, or both. Then you may need fine tuning with the springs if there is a stubborn stumble.

Hey guys it is a used 1405. The guy used it for 6 months and needed more cfm so i got it cheap. As far as where it is set i haven't a clue. I was used to working on the 2150 Motorcraft so this will be all new too me. Thanks for any response.

so it was never sitting down?, and on what engine was it, dependind on the demands of the other engine you might wanna change mettering rod and jets, and bout what you said about the guy needing a bigger carb maybe he was running this one too rich...

danlee has a good reputation on FTE.danlee has a good reputation on FTE.
Go to edelbrock.com and download the calibration manual. Then check the float level, metering rods and jets to insure that they are set to factory specs. Use the calibration table to get the right metering rods and jets.

It does sound like the float is too high and dumping fuel, you should get that right first.

Alright will do, I think it might be rich when you rev it to about 3500 or 4000 she will blow alittle black smoke. I thought it might be rich from the get go, just by the smell alone. I will fiddle with it and let everyone know. I know it was on a corvette or maybe a chevelle, I can't remember I just know he said he needed more CFM.
