What rpm you run to test this?

Keep in mind it not v8 that can spin fast rpm It stop at 4,000 or less if over it would hurt little plus stress on valve guide then later it would start put oil in cylinder cause burn.

How I know we sold 93 F150 4.9L that have 170,000 miles no burn oil well guy was young so bought for $2,500 then next week we saw his drive it blow lot white smoke. I ask his can I ride with his. I see what he do wrong. It have manual transmission he shift at 3,000 rpm that too much for me.

I alway shift 2,000 rpm or less if I pull trailer then it will be 2,300 rpm to 2,500 rpm.

well the truck is a 93 ext cab swb ofcorse it has the 4.9 auto 3.08 gears. the truck had 114,000 miles on it when i got it and its my first inline 6 so i been kinda scared to drive it. i mean i drive it like a old lady im very easy with the truck. the test was run sitting still in my drive way i just reved it a lil to kinda torque it up a lil like you would to to launch the truck so the rpms didnt get real high. as for the rpms i have no clue i been planning to put a factory tach in soon.

You should have tach for this is best thing. My 79 f150 don't have one and I have no idea what rpm on highway but go 60 mph until I put tach I was surprise to see 2,500 rpm so I low to 50 to 55 mph so mpg is good most 18 to 20 mpg. Best mpg with this engine is run at 1,800 to 2,220 rpm.

It very good motor will last lot miles.

Did you ever stop to think that whoever you bought the truck from loaded it up with STP or Motor Honey or heavy oil to stop the noise so the truck could be sold?????? And you by changing the oil uncovered the problem. Not everyone is honest.

well whe i got the truck it was wrecked and had sat for a while. so hideing the noise i dont think was involved. the truck was wrecked 2 years befor i got it and had set un touched till i got it.i read in another post i been reading thru this section for the last 3 days. but in that post a guy said his did simaler till about 1,000 miles after the change then it would stop if i remember the post right. im going to let a better mechanic look at it tommorow and see if he cant find out whats wrong. if all else fails ill just get a 460 and put in it.

No you should stay with this motor it get great mpg than 460.

can you have oil sent to place who can test to see if it metal in oil or bearing's material. That should help you know what wrong with engine.

Where State you in.

My Bronco with 302 knocked slightly from when we bought it with 45K miles but you could only hear it at idle. When I changed the rods and mains at 140K miles the knock went away. All the babbit material from the bearings was gone, the truck had been leased before I bought it, I bet the guy just did not change the oil. Truck now has 250K on it and is still quiet so overall the engine survived this abuse after I took care of the bearings.

You have cats? I'm a fan of glass packs. I have a 31'' on my 300 and I'm finally happy with it. Not quite as loud as I'd like, but the tone is good. Deep.

Get a sound clip.

Truck started knocking yesterday. I started it up to move it just for a few seconds. Scared me. It went away though...

A little lifter rattle in these engines at start up is nearly normal if not totally normal.

That makes me feel better. I wonder if maybe I heard it more clearly because I just changed my oil. I had 5 qts 10W30 with 1 qt Lucas HD oil stabil. That stuff is thick like honey. This time I went straight 6 qts of 10W30. I'll do 5.5 qts of 10w30 next time with .5 Lucas HDOS.
