More power from my PSD

Hey, I have a 96 powerstroke that is currently running with the help of a Banks turbo down pipe, 4in. exhaust (no cat), Tymar intake, and Hypertech tuning. I want to upgrade to a little more power, but I don't want to spend a ton of money. I was going to upgrade to the Banks Powerpack (minus the exhaust system of course), but they quoted me about $2,400; which is a little more than I want to spend. My question is, is there somewhere that I can get an upgraded turbo or turbo housing, an intercooler, pyro, and boost guage significantly cheaper than Banks?

Yes, Yes, Yes.. and Yes

Banks systems are way over priced and are nothing special. There is only one bolt on upgrade for our turbo (D66 from beans, $1100 or so).

For the gauges, the ballpark figures for boost are about $30 and $100 and some for the pyro. Their are many venders that you can go through. Many folks on here like the ISSPRO's.

A Superduty or 6.0's intercooler will work with ours. You can find them on eBay for cheap. Takes a little fab work but nothing too difficult. I believe GTS and another company do make intercooler kits. Someone will chirp in about that. I made mine for about $270.

As far as programming, a TW or DP-Tuner is the only way to go with these OBS trucks. These guys know how to really burn some programs! Depending on how many tunes it will run ya around $300-500 I would guess.

Thanks for the good info on that. I was looking on beans website and I saw that they had a turbo housing that is supposed to spool up quicker than the stock units. Does anyone have any experience with one of these? I wonder if it is somewhat comparable with the Banks unit. It was a good price too at $125. I would just like to have a little more snap right off the bottom. Another thing, I noticed that the pyro from Banks mounts in the DP, but everyone on here says to mount it pre-turbo. If I mount it pre-turbo, where exactly should I put it?

Ok, you can get the 1.0 housing for your turbo. It will spool up faster. However, depending on how much $$ you want in this you may want to stick with the 1.10. I'd go with the 1.0 housing if I were you. You can always go back to stock if you really get the fuel flowing.

Yes, pre is the way to go. There is way (up to 600 degrees difference) with it post turbo. Most people mount the thermo on the driver side on the manifold. Doesn't really matter where, but there is some good access right there on the "elbow" below the up-pipe.

Here is an excellent thread on the pre-post turbo discussion. Pictures are worth a thousand words!

Ah, I see. That is quite a difference. So, do I drill a hole in the manifold and thread the sending unit in or what? No, I will probably not be adding anything that will dump a ton more fuel into the motor, so the 1.0 housing might be the way to go. Hey FARM69 I see you are running a 203 stat in yours; does it ever get too hot? I notice that mine runs kinda cold, and it runs better when it is hotter.

Yep, drive a hole according to the right size. I can't remember if it's a 3/8's of not. You need to tap the whole. It will say on the instructions that come with the pyro.

I'm running the 203 stat. According to my aftermarket gauge I usually run at 210-218. I never get above 220. I'm not sure why, I guess every truck is different.

The 203 is another great mod. The engine runs better at 203 instead of 186. I'd adivse to do it in the future. There is only one place to get it.. diesesite

D66

Not sure where ya get the TW tuner.. someone will chime in. The DP-tuner is DP-tuner.com

Many venders have the ISSPRO's. Someone will chime in as for the best place to get them.

Tony Wildman = http://www.totaldieselperformance.com/ or 817-932-5078

Alot of people have gotten their Isspro's from Diesel Manor = DieselManor - Taking the Mystery out of Diesel Performance™ Good folks to deal with, they can get any Isspro gauge (even if they don't stock it). They have after hours help and are very knowledgeable.

You can also get a rebuilt turbo with a 1.00 housing and new upgraded bearings, new wheels, etc. from Ron's Turbo Shop for around $600. You might want to look into this depending on how many miles are on your turbo.

Hope this helps some.

i am running the D66 turbo from Beans and it's a good turbo, not something you can get to crazy with, but it does work a heck of a lot better than a stock turbo. TW is the place to get your tunes you can pick which programs you want, and have him re-burn if you ever want to change tunes. Gauges are up to you some here use Isspro, I personally use Autometer Ultra Lite's, but gauges are really a preference thing. Intercooler is the same as the guages, you can get one from a 6.0 or 7.3 Superduty and custom fab your pipes. I see you have a Tymar Intake, if you call Dale and tell him what you're looking for in your truck he'll help you get there for a lot less than Banks.
Good Luck.

Get out autometers website. They have a pretty cool setup that lets you look at all the gauges. I myself, am I fan of the Cobalts. Gotta love that blue.
