64 f100 rear brake questions

I have a 64 f100. Almost road ready, but i want to get the e-brake to function somewhat. I am needing/wanting to remove the rear hub and I read somewhere that I have to pull the axle out to do so? It's been a few years since I worked on one, but I don't remember pulling the axle to do a brake job. Usually just used a bfh to get it off. If someone know for sure, or know a easier way it sure would be apprieciated.
Thanks in advance

look at the doortag..post the axle code...also, number of lugs and look under the middle looking rearward...see if the carrier is bolted to the housing or not.

you have to pull the axle if its a full floater Dana 60 (8 lug axle). Since you have a F100, I would assume you have the 5 lug, semi-float 9" (or dana 60) You should be able to pull the drum off without removing the axle.

9 inch if I remember the axle code correctly. The axles do not have to come out to pull the drums off. It's a matter of loosening the shoe adjusters and breaking the rust around the lug and center hole. Once that is done they pull off without too much fuss.

A visual clue to the 8 or 9 inch is the only hardware on the center of the axle will be on the front side where the driveshaft connects to the pinnion. There will be nuts all the way around the outer "chunk" holding it in the housing.

Exactly what he said. When I first did my brakes, one of the drums was SO stuck on the hub that I actually took a huge iron rod, pushed it under the truck so that one end of it stuck out on the other side of the truck, and the other end set against the backside lip of the drum. Then my Dad took the BFH and swung at it real good. After a few swings, it still wouldn't budge. I ended up using heat and going crazy with the BFH. Lucky I didn't distort and break anything, but it was a major pain in the ass. Naturally, the other drum popped off with a problem.
