Need a New Clutch...Need Some Advice

Hey guys, Im coming over from the IDI section to ask you guys a few questions about clutches. First questions is are the trannys in the IDI and powerstroke trucks the same? If they are then im hoping you guys can give me some advice.

A few days ago i noticed my clutch wasnt engaging until the pedal is fully released. Sometimes it doesnt even feel like its engaging until i get on the gas. Ive calld a few local tranny shops around here to see how much it will cost to get my clutch done.(i still dont know if im going to try and do it myself, or pay someone to do it) But from talking to the shops around here it looks like its going to cost around $1600 to get my clutch done.

All the shops mentioned the DMF vs. SMF situation to me. They all recommended i go with a SMF and upgrade to the 12" clutch from Luk. Im still undecided about whether im going to go with a DMF or SMF. The only thing worrying me about going with a SMF is ive heard its common to have some pretty loud gear rattle after doing the clutch.

Im just wondering if any of you guys have converted over to a SMF and what you think about it. Also just because the shops around here recommend Luk that doesnt mean i have to use them. Theres also southbend or valair. Does anybody have any experience with any of those company and what do you guys think about them? Thanks

i think it is the same tranny... and go with the valair... i wish i had and dan over at valair is very good to talk to... and while you are at it you will get a better price if you tell him cody from death row diesel sent ya... i am sure cody will not care for using his name... rubberduck would be his name on here... very good guy... and seeing that you are in the process of modding the truck get a clutch that will handle the power... tell dan what your needs of the clutch is... go to valair.com

hopefully cody will see this thread. or ill send him a pm just to be sure he doesnt mind me using his name. Im going to contact valair on monday and see what dan has to say. I just hope they ship to canada.

Theres a small diesel performance shop up here in Langley, BC called Peak Diesel Performance that ive dealt with quiet abit and they are a dealer for southbend so if it doesnt work out with valair then ill probably go to that place and get a southbend clutch instead of the luk.

Have either of you guys converted over to a SMF? and how do you like it?

I like the smf. The only real noise is when you are lugging the engine. Clutch pedal requires much less effort to push in. $1600 for the job is crazy. I had mine done for about half of that by a professional mechanic.

I have a valair stock organic clutch with a HD spring hub. 61 Uni opinions are exactly like mine. I did my clutch in a 4x4 in 9hrs with two floor jacks.

1957F100, by all means, call Dan and tell him Cody with Death Row Diesel sent you. He will definately hook you up. I do a ton of business with him and he always takes care of my guys. I don't mind at all. And the single mass will rattle a little more, but the benifits far out weigh that. For sure go with the Valair.

Alright cody im going to call dan on monday and see what he says. What clutch did you end up getting from them? Im going to see what clutch dan recommends for my truck. Obviously im not putting out as much power as you guys. But so far my truck has got the pump turned up, and im looking into getting some better injectors(DPS sells some stage 1 injectors for the IDI. dont know much about the injectors though). and in the near future when i finish school im going to either turbo my IDI motor....or pull it and put a 12V in there. So now would be the time to get a clutch that will last through all that.

I've got the Full Ceramic with the HD hub. It's good for 600hp/1100tq.

Hey cody there at Valair do they have a clutch setup that could hold around 800 to 900 hp? my sister and her husband are in the process of building a pulling truck its an 02 for with a 24 valve cummins. they had a clutch put in twice and was told that it should hold about 800 hp and its only pushing a little over 400 they are geting upset. i told them to talk to me and not they guy selling it to them ,the shop owner, who only wants money and has his own pullin truck. any help would be much appreciated.

mk, I have no doubt Dan has a clutch for your sis. If they are running a 24v, are they using a NV4500 five speed? Dan hasn't finished his double disk for the Ford trannys yet, but he has them for the Dodge applications. We just put a DD in my best friends truck and it holds great. I really suggest talking to Dan and tell him what you have. He'll set you up with whatever you need. But if it's a pulling truck, a DD is the only way to go. Tell him I sent ya.
