Dash Squeaks Fix

Thought I would start a new thread. These pictures show how to fix the squeak above the instrument cluster. I used the green felt dots used for the bottoms of lamps. I got them at Target. The thinner then better.

1) Grab this plastic section with both hands and pull towards you. The entire section won't come off completely, as it's bolted to the bottom, but it will come out enough so you can add the felt.

Look for marks on the plastic where the piece you pulled off rubs. Put the felt stickers here. The more the better. I ran out.

The other side.

When Done push the piece back into place.

I also have .pdf's from the manual that show how to take off this section completely as well as the section directly below the steering wheel. It's 5 small bolts and takes about 3 minutes. This will give you access to more possible squeak locations.

Last night I took off the left most vent and added electrical tape to the points it makes contact with the dash. No more noise from that. I released the clips by going through the lower section of dash on the lower left by your knee. Easier than the manual would have you do it. 3 screws and some clips gives you access. Here are some pics which are bad-left the good camera at work.

Now I have one gremlin in the top left of the dash I can't find. Quiet click like noise only when it's warm out side. Comes and goes. I took the instrument cluster out, added felt to most plastic/plastic areas, took the steering column cover off, and I can't seem to locate it. I need one of those mechanic stethoscopes......

Nice, thanks for the info!

I had the dealer put in a kit to quite a glove box door rubbing noise.

I had a black wire 3 " wire I put in the crack to keep it quite, I showed the dealer and he said we can't have that on a $45,000 vehical.....

Well he spent 1 to 2 hours putting in this kit and said it was fixed...... Well it still did the same thing, so I found another chunck of black plastic and stuffed in the crack and no more noise

Can you tell me where exactly you put the wire? Do you have a way to send a pic?

I would like to make a thread or pdf with all the squeak type fixes.

I will try to take a pic tonight.

The wire is right on the seam of the glovebox, if you are looking at it from the passager seat, you can see the wire, but most people don't know it is there, unless I show them.....

Great, thanks. I bet you could cure that with some strategically place felt dots.

The small wood piece on the bottom is held in by 4 push type clips. I used my finger nail to create a gap on the top corner. Once you get enough room, just pull outward. Takes a bit of force. Might want to put a towel around the gear shift so when it does come out, you don't scratch anything.

If you think you have it bad with a ford,go get a chevy,we flew to Denver and thought we had an explorer mini leased(40 day's) from budget,go to pick it up and we get a trailblazer, want a POS,get one of them puppie's,wind noise, they wrote the book on it,when it rain's and your standing still at a light you would think you were in a hail storm for the noise, must not have any insulation between the headliner and the roof, the tran's is shifting up & down on any small hill,GM tran's have done that from the late 80's,would think they would have fixed that by now, even my wife noticed it asking if something was wrong with it,I said no it just like the Blazer 2 or what ever they called them back then that your sister had, the power window's act like they can hardly go up & that's with the motor running, good luck with the voltage drop with it off,our 10 year old explorer that we traded for the 2007 expy window's ran faster!!! @ 10 year's of age,the radio sound's like s&%t,no amount of setting the base ect will get it right, the parking brake does not hold forward or back, and in a ford you get a outside temp gauage and a MPG read out and a trip reading, not is this cheep POS,not just how many mile's it has total, now it does get beter milage than the 10 year old explorer did but it get's about the same MPG as our 2007 expy, now that's not right, the trailblazer has an in line 6, 4.2cid i think and cant weigh more than 4000#'s,the expy has a 5.4 and has to weigh close to 6000#'s,go rent a trailblazer for a week end ,you will LOVE your ford as we did our 1997 explorer and do our 2002 F350 PSD & our 2007 EXPY,last year thrifty put us in a Grand Cherokee and it was 2 X'S the suv this chevy was.

Thanks for your thread. Mine had a squeak forever from the ac vent, I had just never bother to fix it. But I got an alarm installed and they pulled off the dash piece around the speedo and it started squeaking like crazy. I pulled everything off, installed the pads and tape and voila! No more squeaks! Thanks.
